Doctors at Hue Central Hospital have just successfully treated and saved the life of a 7-year-old girl with severe arrhythmia, heart muscle damage, and risk of death.

On March 19, information from Hue Central Hospital said that the team of doctors and nurses from the hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care - Emergency Department had just saved the life of a child patient with severe arrhythmia and severe myocardial damage at risk of death.

The patient was treated by a technique of removing blood from the vein and returning it to the artery (VA-ECMO), a technique similar to an artificial heart that can pump blood to nourish the body.

Previously, NNAN (7 years old, residing in Mo Duc District, Quang Ngai) was hospitalized after showing signs of fatigue and a slow heart rate.

At the hospital, the patient suddenly became very tired, had cold hands and feet, and low blood pressure, which progressed very quickly. Through examination and paraclinical tests, the doctors determined that this was a case of severe arrhythmia, with myocardial damage leading to cardiogenic shock, severe reduction in heart function, and a very high risk of death.

Professor Pham Nhu Hiep, Director of Hue Central Hospital, directly directed doctors to urgently consult to conduct tests and come up with the optimal solution.

The patient was then placed on VA-ECMO for immediate cardiac support.

After 5 days of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), the patient's heart function gradually recovered, but the heart rhythm was still very irregular, so the patient was then transported to the operating room to have a pacemaker inserted.

After more than 2 weeks of treatment, the patient's health gradually improved, he could walk normally, his heart function improved well, and his hemodynamic and paraclinical indices returned to normal. The patient is expected to be discharged tomorrow (March 20).

Hue Central Hospital said that fulminant myocarditis (also known as malignant myocarditis) is a disease with a high mortality rate. The disease has a sudden onset, cardiogenic shock, severe hemodynamic disorders, severe arrhythmias requiring vasopressors, pacemaker placement, and ECMO support.

According to Professor Pham Nhu Hiep, the ECMO technique was successfully performed for the first time in Vietnam by Hue Central Hospital in March 2009, mainly for patients with cardiogenic shock, myocarditis, cardiovascular surgery, and progressive acute respiratory failure with ineffective mechanical ventilation. This technique is being applied by the hospital's Pediatric Center. This is also the 6th pediatric patient to be successfully performed using the ECMO technique.
