US Meteorologists Warn of Snowstorms Like Winter 2024

More than 55 million people in the eastern part of the United States are in the path of a dangerous blizzard as the National Weather Service (NWS) issued warnings for states from the Central Plains to the Mid-Atlantic, AFP reported on January 5.

Blizzard warnings or advisories have been issued from Montana to the eastern states of Maryland, Delaware and Virginia.

Parts of New York and Pennsylvania are facing a "severe lake-effect snowstorm" coming from the Great Lakes. The NWS estimates the area could see up to 2 feet (61 cm) of snow, or as much as 4 feet (1.22 m), according to AccuWeather.

The NWS said the storm will sweep across the Central Plains (including North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas) in the early morning of January 5 (local time). "Heavy snowfall in affected areas will make travel extremely hazardous, with road closures and the risk of vehicles becoming stranded," the NWS warned.

Temperatures could drop to minus 18 degrees Celsius in some states, while dangerous conditions are expected to increase with strong winds.

From Kansas to Missouri and Ohio, up to 13 inches (33 centimeters) of snow is expected on January 5. "For some areas, this could be the heaviest snowfall in more than a decade," according to the NWS.

Snow is also forecast in the US capital Washington DC, with snowfall ranging from 12cm to 24cm in some areas.

Another major concern is snow and sleet that will move east from Kansas to West Virginia and Virginia. Roads are at risk of being covered in ice, making travel hazardous, downing trees and damaging power lines, leaving millions of people without power in the cold.

Governors in Missouri and Virginia have declared states of emergency and used social media to warn residents of the weather risks over the weekend.

Southeastern states are also in the storm's path, with Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear warning of the risk of traffic accidents and power outages.
