Thai newspaper: "Vietnam team is the first Southeast Asian team to be eliminated"

After the match between Vietnam and Indonesia, Thailand's leading daily newspaper Thairath wrote: "Vietnam is the first team to be eliminated from the 2023 Asian Cup, after they lost to Indonesia in the Southeast Asian derby."

"The results in Group D last night (January 19) favored the two teams Iraq and Indonesia. These teams defeated Japan and the Vietnamese team respectively," Thairath added.

Like many newspapers and football experts in the region, the Thai newspaper commented that the Vietnamese team lost because of a very obvious mistake by central defender Nguyen Thanh Binh, leading to the situation where the Vietnamese team had to accept a penalty.

Thairath described: "In the 39th minute, defender Nguyen Thanh Binh fouled striker Rafael Struick of the Indonesian team in the 16m50 area. The referee awarded Indonesia a penalty."

"The referee also tried to check the VAR technology again to verify his judgment, but the decision to award a penalty remained unchanged. Asnawi Mangkualam successfully executed the penalty, scoring to help Indonesia lead 1-0," were the lines written in Thairath newspaper.

Thailand's leading daily newspaper concluded: "The match ended with Indonesia winning 1-0. The victory helped the archipelago team rekindle their hopes of entering the knockout round."

"On the contrary, the Vietnamese team lost two matches, still has no points, and is definitely eliminated. The Vietnamese team also lost the chance to win third place in the group, because they lost to Indonesia and Japan in direct confrontations," Thairath affirmed.

Meanwhile, another Thai newspaper, Siam Sport, reported: "Captain Asnawi Mangkualam's penalty goal was enough to help Indonesia overcome the Vietnamese team."

"Vietnam became the first team in the group of Southeast Asian representatives (including Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia) to be eliminated from the 2023 Asian Cup. Indonesia will compete with Japan on January 24," Siam Sport added.

In addition to reporting that the Vietnamese team was eliminated, Siam Sport also praised Iraq, the team that had secured a place in the group stage.

Siam Sport said: "Iraq has entered the knockout round after two consecutive wins. On the contrary, the Vietnamese team, even if they win against Iraq in the final match on January 24, will still be eliminated, because the Vietnamese team lost to Indonesia and Japan in the head-to-head results."
