The storm also killed a man who went outside to check on his car. New York has declared a state of emergency for the entire state, as strong winds and heavy rain are expected to continue.

One of the hardest hit areas was the Mohawk Valley. A tornado ripped through the city of Rome, destroying four buildings and causing severe damage to 22 others. The storm was so powerful that it knocked an 83-ton B-52 off its pad at Griffiss Air Force Base.
At least three other tornadoes were reported in neighboring Hamilton and Warren counties, according to NBC5 meteorologists.
Robert Popple, 82, from the village of Canastota, west of Rome, has been identified as the man killed in the storm. A neighbour reported that he had gone out to check on his classic car when it was swept away.
About 300,000 customers across New York state were without power at the height of the storm. "These extreme weather events are no longer unusual. They are the new normal," said New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
