Ensuring traffic safety for students

September is the peak month for traffic safety for students going to school. Many activities and models have been carried out in the province to help students go to school safely every day.

Diversified forms of propaganda

Vivid, intuitive, easy to understand and familiar are the feelings of students about the traffic propaganda boards installed right at the gate of Kim Dong Primary School, in Ward 1, Vi Thanh City. The 2023-2024 school year is the first year the model has been applied by the school. Not only do they make the school gate more lively, but these propaganda boards also help parents and students grasp information and common signs, especially always wearing helmets when participating in traffic.

Nguyen Phan Khanh Ngoc, a 5A5 student at Kim Dong Primary School, shared: “My parents always let me wear a helmet when I go to school. Whenever I forget, my parents remind me. Wearing a helmet helps me stay safe and obey traffic laws.”

Teacher Huynh Thi Cam Thuy, Team Leader, Kim Dong Primary School, Vi Thanh City, informed: The school has built a beautiful road, planted flowers and installed traffic propaganda boards. The flower care is shared by students in grades 4-5. Each class has a few pots, in collaboration with the ward youth union members.

“Through the model, the school hopes to raise awareness among residents, parents and students about environmental protection and compliance with traffic laws. 100% of students practice traffic safety well. When riding a motorbike to school, they wear helmets, drive on the right side of the road, and in the lane reserved for pedestrians,” said teacher Huynh Thi Cam Thuy.

While taking care of the flowers at the school gate with his friends, Ma Nhat Huy, a student of class 5A5 at Kim Dong Primary School, did not forget to look at the notice boards with his friends and remind each other to follow them to ensure safety. “I find the traffic propaganda boards at the school gate very vivid and easy to understand. When school is over, we do not gather in front of the school gate, but go in the correct lane. When crossing the street, we must follow the median strip and watch out for motorbikes and cars. I always remind my friends to walk on the side of the road and not to joke around while participating in traffic,” Huy said.

In schools in the area, the traffic safety education model for students has been implemented for a long time, creating a positive change in their awareness from a young age. This year, with the propaganda boards at Kim Dong Primary School, the students are even more interested. Each student becomes an active propagandist, helping relatives comply with traffic safety laws.

Mr. Tran Thanh Nhan, Principal of Kim Dong Primary School, said: In the new school year 2023-2024, the school has 1,136 students studying in 30 primary classes. In addition to general knowledge, the school always focuses on instructing students in social knowledge, especially traffic safety.

“The school has planned to educate students during flag-raising ceremonies. We have called on benefactors and parents to provide helmets for students. Homeroom teachers regularly remind students to be aware of traffic safety when riding motorbikes with their parents or when riding bicycles to school. In the new school year, the school has visual education at the school gate, not only about traffic but also many other topics,” said Mr. Tran Thanh Nhan.

According to Mr. Tran Thanh Nhan, in the near future, the school will invite representatives of the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee to the school to propagate to students. In addition, every year the school asks parents to sign a commitment to comply with traffic laws, this action is always agreed and supported by parents.

Safety first

Mr. Nguyen Lam Thanh, Chief of Office of the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee, said: The Provincial Traffic Safety Committee requested districts, towns and cities to direct functional forces to be on duty at school gates. Ensure traffic safety and order, especially ensuring safety for parents taking their children to primary school, avoiding congestion at school gates and unfortunate accidents. Schools build traffic-safe school gates, assign volunteer students to coordinate in maintaining order and preventing people from trading in front of the school gates, divide the entrances for students in an orderly manner, ensure the school gates are airy, clean and beautiful, making it convenient for parents to pick up and drop off their children; arrange temporary parking lots.

“The provincial Traffic Safety Committee requests the Department of Education and Training to direct schools to organize students to sign a commitment to strictly comply with traffic laws. For parents with high school and middle school students, do not give vehicles to children who are not qualified to drive according to regulations. Commit to wearing helmets for children aged 6 and older when participating in traffic,” Mr. Nguyen Lam Thanh emphasized.

According to Mr. Thanh, in the new school year, in addition to rectifying road traffic safety at the school gate area, the authorities will coordinate to closely inspect the ferry crossings, especially those that frequently transport many students. The ferry owners are required to arrange, monitor and supervise the students, not to carry more than the prescribed number, and to provide adequate lifebuoys to ensure the safety of the students.
