The Guardian reports that snowstorms and severe cold in the US over the past week have killed at least 55 people in 10 US states, many of them related to hypothermia or traffic accidents. Tennessee alone recorded 19 deaths.
The extreme weather also affected about 70 million people across the United States, causing thousands of flights to be canceled.
In Washington, DC, schools were canceled for the second time in a week. In Oregon, Governor Tina Kotek declared a state of emergency after a snowstorm hit the area on January 18.
In several states, including West Virginia, local authorities are advising people to limit their outdoor activities during the current severe weather conditions.
In some places, temperatures have dropped to -45 degrees Celsius. The extreme freezing weather in the US is forecast to last until next week.
