Over the past four years, the patient has undergone chemotherapy in Moscow, followed by surgery to remove the tumor along with part of his shoulder and several more chemotherapy sessions in Germany. The results have been positive, but according to the German protocol, doctors will remove no more than 10-15 metastases in one surgery.
Russia's leading cancer treatment center finally decided to perform the "historic surgery" and successfully removed all 170 metastatic tumors from the male patient's lungs in six surgeries, each lasting several hours.
"There has never been a similar case recorded in the world," RT quoted a statement from Russia's NN Petrov National Cancer Research Center.

Metastasis occurs when cancer spreads from its original site and new tumors form in other organs. Most cancer deaths are due to metastasis rather than the primary tumor.
"Removing 30 or 50 metastases in the lower lobe of the lung causes a lot of damage to the body and it is important that the patient needs time to recover. This is also the reason why the removal of 170 tumors for the patient was performed in 6 separate surgeries," explained Dr. Yevgeny Levchenko, Head of the Department of Thoracic Oncology at NN Petrov.
Three of the surgeries were performed using the isolated chemical reaction method - a modernized and patented technique of the Russian Medical Center - which can save the lives of patients even with terminal cancer. This method helps to remove the smallest metastases of lung tissue, thereby eliminating the possibility of new metastases appearing in the lungs.
