Unlike last time, this time US Vice President Kamala Harris proactively accepted the invitation to debate and waited for former President Donald Trump to respond.
"Vice President Harris is ready for another opportunity to stand on the same platform as Donald Trump," Reuters quoted Jen O'Malley Dillon, Harris' campaign manager.
"Mr. Trump has no reason to decline this debate. It will be the same format and setup as his so-called victory in June, when he praised CNN's moderators, its rules and ratings," Dillon said.
Former President Trump's campaign has not yet responded to a request for comment on the "challenge."
CNN reported that the proposed debate would be similar to the one held on June 27 between then-Democratic candidate President Joe Biden and Mr. Trump, including lasting 90 minutes.
Last week, Mr. Trump hinted at the possibility of participating in the third bipartisan presidential debate, after facing Ms. Harris at an event hosted by ABC News on September 10.
"Maybe if I'm in a good mood," Mr Trump told reporters during a stop in California, after posting on Truth Social that "there won't be a third debate".
With an unsatisfactory performance against Mr. Trump on June 27, President Biden finally decided to "hand over the baton" to Ms. Harris and leave the race.
