Van Lang, Vo Truong Toan and Tan Tao Universities use four combinations to enroll in the Medical major, one of which contains Literature.
This year is the first time Van Lang University (HCMC) has recruited students for the Medical major using the following methods: direct admission, graduation exam scores, academic records, and competency assessment scores of Ho Chi Minh City National University.
In terms of graduation exam scores and academic records, the school uses four combinations, including D12 (Literature, Chemistry, English). In addition, the school considers traditional combinations, including A00 (Math, Physics, Chemistry), B00 (Math, Chemistry, Biology), and D08 (Math, Biology, English).
Vo Truong Toan University (Hau Giang) and Tan Tao University (Long An) both use the B03 block combination (Math, Literature, Biology) to recruit medical students, applied to candidates who are admitted based on their graduation exam scores. Other combinations are B00, D08 and A02 (Math, Physics, Biology).
Of the 26 universities that offer medical training nationwide, only these three schools use a combination of Literature subjects for admission.
Dr. Nguyen Hung Vi, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Van Lang University, said that this is to meet the practical needs of the medical profession and society, while creating conditions for students with good academic performance who want to become doctors.
According to him, the demand for health care today is very diverse, in addition to medical examination and treatment, there are other specialties such as consulting, health communication and education, psychotherapy, preventive medicine, family health management. Society also requires more and more from doctors, in addition to good expertise, they need to have a good attitude, the ability to listen, share, and give reasonable advice. Doctors need to have communication skills, persuasion, and create trust for patients.
"The qualities of a good Literature student are essential for this job," said Mr. Vi.

The regulations for admission to the medical school of Van Lang University require students to have excellent academic performance in grade 12, with an average score of 8 or higher for each subject in the admission group. According to Mr. Vi, students with good academic performance are often good at all subjects. Students who are good at Literature, Chemistry, and English will also have a good foundation in Math, Biology, and Physics, so there is no need to worry too much about their ability to study and absorb medical knowledge.
"We decided to include this group in the medical school admissions based on our work experience and training in the medical field, as well as a private survey of some doctors," said Mr. Vi.
A doctor in Hanoi said that Medicine is a science that requires precision. The first requirement to become a doctor is to have a basic knowledge of natural sciences (Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology). In addition, being good at English is also necessary for research or working in private hospitals, where many foreign patients come for treatment.
"Literature knowledge is important but it has no meaning in deciding whether a person will become a doctor," he said. According to him, communication is a soft skill and every profession needs it. It is not because we want doctors to be good at communication that we recruit students based on Literature.
In 2014, the Minister of Health responded to the proposal of some principals of medical and pharmaceutical schools to use Literature as a subject for admission. The leaders of the health sector at that time believed that Literature was very necessary for medical staff, helping them to speak fluently, express their writing clearly and grammatically. At that time, many people also thought that this proposal was unreasonable.
