The announcement was made on August 20, shortly after a summit in Baku between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
According to the Arab TV channel Al Mayadeen, the application was sent to Russia, the current rotating chair of BRICS. Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry spokesman Aykhan Hajizade confirmed that the country is pushing for membership in the BRICS bloc.
BRICS was founded in 2009 to promote closer ties between Russia, China, India, Brazil, and was later joined by South Africa and Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously sought to brand BRICS as an alliance of “global majorities” as part of Moscow’s efforts to multipolarize international relations and reduce the impact of sanctions over Russia’s conflict with Ukraine. The group has also spearheaded efforts to replace the US dollar as the dominant currency for international trade.
Azerbaijan's announcement came after Russian President Putin's visit to Azerbaijan for bilateral talks with President Ilham Aliyev.
Azerbaijan has also become an increasingly important energy partner for Europe, after signing a deal in mid-2022 with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to help the continent reduce its dependence on Russian oil and gas.
