Accordingly, developers, startups, entrepreneurs and enterprises, as well as government, educational and non-profit organizations will have more options to run their applications and serve their end users from AWS data centers (TTDL) located in Malaysia.

The construction and operation of the new AWS Region is estimated to contribute approximately US$12.1 billion to Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP), supporting an average of more than 3,500 full-time jobs in other businesses annually through 2038. These jobs, which include construction, facilities maintenance, engineering, telecommunications, and others across the country’s broader economy, will be part of the AWS supply chain in Malaysia.

“The launch of the AWS Region in Malaysia provides Malaysian organizations and businesses of all sizes with access to new and emerging technologies, accelerating our country’s digital innovation capabilities. This is a significant step towards realizing the vision of Malaysia’s new Industrial Masterplan 2030 to build a highly-innovative, prosperous, inclusive and sustainable economy,” said Tengku Zafrul, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) of Malaysia.

He also said that the transformative power of digitalization, cloud computing and AI is a key driver behind Malaysia’s efforts to become a manufacturing and services hub in Asia. As the largest investment by a global technology company in Malaysia, AWS Region will help Malaysia maintain its global competitiveness.

“The new AWS Region in Malaysia enables organizations in the APAC region to fully tap into the world’s largest and most trusted cloud platform, enabling customers to deploy advanced applications powered by AWS technologies such as AI and ML,” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President, Infrastructure Services at AWS. “Malaysia’s rapidly growing digital economy requires access to secure, resilient, and sustainable cloud infrastructure.”

Following the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region, AWS now has 108 Availability Zones across 34 geographic regions, and has also announced plans to launch 18 additional Availability Zones and 6 AWS Regions in Mexico, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates, Taiwan (China), Thailand, and AWS European Sovereign Cloud.

AWS offers the broadest and most comprehensive portfolio of services on the market, including analytics, compute, databases, IoT, generative AI, mobile services, storage, and many other cloud technologies.

As part of its long-term commitment, AWS plans to invest approximately US$6.2 billion (MYR29.2 billion) in Malaysia by 2038.

Malaysian telecommunications service provider CelcomDigi is using Amazon Bedrock to access high-performance platform models (FMs) and purpose-built large language models (LLMs), enabling enterprise-wide AI sandboxes to rapidly and securely innovate for their consumer and enterprise customers.

“With the support of AWS infrastructure and AI services to power our business support systems and consumer applications, we are working to improve operational efficiency and deliver better customer experiences,” said CelcomDigi CEO Datuk Idham Nawawi.

Meanwhile, Pei-Si Lai, CEO of GXBank - Malaysia's first digital bank with a mission to enhance sustainable financial capacity for all Malaysians, said: "By building on the AWS cloud, we were able to launch GXBank within 16 months, serving over 750,000 customers with 13 million transactions in just 8 months."

“The presence of the AWS Region in Malaysia helps us further reduce latency in accessing critical cloud services, enhancing and scaling our rapidly growing AI vision platform while ensuring data compliance,” said Lim Chee How, Founder and CEO at Tapway, a homegrown Malaysian startup and leading AI solutions provider in Southeast Asia.
