According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the current price of green onions in Binh Tan district is very high at 26,000 VND/kg, more than 1.5 million VND/quintal (60kg), an increase of 11,000 VND/kg or 660,000 VND/quintal compared to the end of March 2025, farmers are very excited.
The reason is that supply cannot meet demand because it is almost the end of the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, the onion acreage in the fields is still small, plus it is currently in the peak of the dry season, which is prone to disease, and the onion yield is not high. With this price, on average, each hectare of green onions, farmers earn a profit of over 10 million VND/crop.
In 2025, the province plans to plant 1,360 hectares of spice crops (of which green onions account for over 40%). Since the beginning of the year, farmers in the province have planted 590 hectares (43.4% of the plan), with 322.5 hectares harvested, yielding 101.1 quintals/ha, and output of 3,260 tons (25.2% of the plan).
In Vinh Long, onions are grown a lot in Binh Tan district, where there are specialized cultivation models in Tan Binh, Tan Luoc, Tan An Thanh communes and Tan Quoi town and it is one of the main crops of the district. Each year, farmers grow 3-4 crops of onions. When the price of green onions is high at 20,000-25,000 VND/kg, onion growers earn a profit of 80-100 million VND/ha/crop.
In 2020, the onion growing area in Binh Tan district reached 3,200 hectares. However, in recent years, due to the high price of agricultural materials and the damage caused by pests and diseases, people have been reluctant to invest in production, leading to a significant decrease in the district's onion growing area.
