British chip designer ARM will soon withdraw the license that longtime partner Qualcomm uses to design chips, Bloomberg reported.
According to financial news agency Bloomberg , ARM has sent a document to Qualcomm about canceling the license to use the chip design architecture within 60 days.
ARM's move is believed to be related to Qualcomm's acquisition of chip design startup Nuvia in 2021.
Nuvia is also an ARM licensee to develop custom chips based on ARM intellectual property.
ARM claimed that the license granted to Nuvia could not be transferred to Qualcomm and the dispute has escalated since then.
Qualcomm has used Nuvia's technology to develop the Oryon cores in its Snapdragon X Elite line of AI computing chips. Just this week, the company introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip for mobile devices.
If Qualcomm loses its ARM license, it could be banned from selling the latest and greatest products.
Qualcomm dominates the mobile chip market, so ARM's move is enough to shake up the industry.
According to Bloomberg , ARM gave Qualcomm 8 weeks to resolve the dispute. A Qualcomm spokesperson confirmed that ARM wanted to interfere with its CPUs and increase royalties despite the rights in the license.
Qualcomm calls ARM's intention to revoke its license "completely baseless."
Currently, ARM and Qualcomm still have an agreement that allows Qualcomm to produce chips based on ARM's complete Cortex cores. However, these cores cannot keep up with x86 designs from Intel and AMD.
The Oryon core in the Snapdragon X Elite processor is much more competitive and is probably the most power-efficient chip available for PCs.
