According to internal sources, Apple has just made a new move to streamline its global retail chain management system under the direction of Ms. Deirdre O'Brien, the company's senior director.
Specifically, Ms. Vanessa Trigub will be appointed to the newly created position of Vice President of Global Stores and Retail Operations. Ms. Trigub was previously responsible for managing stores in the Western US region and retail operations. She currently oversees retail leaders in Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific and the Eastern US region.
The promotion and change in reporting structure gives Ms. Trigub more authority and simplifies the retail organization under Ms. O'Brien, an Apple veteran who returned to oversee both retail and human resources last year.
As part of the restructuring, Ms. O’Brien will have fewer direct reports. Instead of managing regional retail managers, she will oversee Ms. Trigub and the vice presidents in charge of retail, marketing and online sales. Ms. O’Brien is also restructuring the human resources department after the departure of former HR director Carol Surface.
Ms. Trigub joined Apple as an intern around the time of the original iPhone launch, and has held various roles in finance, mergers and acquisitions, and retail operations. In 2023, she was promoted to the position of corporate vice president, retail operations and the Western region.
Apple's retail network, which has about 535 stores globally, has been relatively stable since Ms. O'Brien took over in 2019, a position previously held by former Burberry Group Plc Chief Executive Angela Ahrendts.
Many insiders in Apple’s retail division believe that Trigub is being groomed as a potential successor to O’Brien, who has been with the company for more than three decades. The iPhone maker has been increasingly focused on building its succession pipeline in recent years as many of its top executives approach retirement age.
The move marks the second notable personnel change at Apple in recent days. Last week, the company officially transferred control of Siri from AI chief John Giannandrea to Vision Pro creator Mike Rockwell, according to Bloomberg News.
In addition to the changes in senior personnel, Apple is also actively expanding its retail network globally. According to some sources, Apple plans to open dozens of new stores in the coming years, focusing on developing markets such as Asia and the Middle East.
Specifically, Apple has opened its first store in Malaysia, located in Kuala Lumpur in 2024. At the same time, the company is also accelerating the upgrade of existing stores, especially flagship stores in major cities such as Shanghai. These moves show that Apple is betting big on the growth potential of the retail market.
