A recent report from AppleInsider said that "apple" is taking one of the biggest steps in its artificial intelligence (AI) development strategy by investing about 1 billion USD in Nvidia's server system, specifically the GB200 NVL72 series - the latest generation of AI super servers announced at the GTC 2024 exhibition.
According to Loop Capital's analysis, Apple is expected to buy about 250 server clusters, each priced at $3.7 to $4 million, signaling that the company has officially entered the AI server cluster race with Super Micro (SMCI) and Dell as its main partners.
The Nvidia GB200 NVL72 server is one of the most advanced AI hardware platforms today, combining 36 Grace CPUs and 72 Blackwell GPUs, connected by new NVLink technology, enabling super-fast data exchange and optimizing AI tasks - especially training and operating large language models (LLM). Each server rack can achieve performance of over 1.4 exaFLOPS, serving complex general AI tasks.
The DGX GB200 NVL72 server system was introduced by Nvidia last year.
The choice to invest in Nvidia hardware is considered a surprising move, as Apple has always prioritized using its own chips, the Apple Silicon line. However, many experts believe that Apple needs to speed up its infrastructure to catch up with Microsoft, Google and Meta, competitors that have made great strides in developing AI infrastructure and practical applications.
Apple is currently implementing a $500 billion long-term plan to expand its infrastructure in the US, including the construction of an AI server factory in Houston, Texas, expected to be operational by 2026. This plan will create 20,000 new jobs, mainly related to AI research and development.
Multiple reports say that over the past 18 months, Apple has been quietly recruiting top AI experts from DeepMind, OpenAI, and Anthropic, focusing on areas such as multimodal AI, real-time modeling, next-generation virtual assistants, and embedded AI on devices. Combined with investments in server infrastructure, it shows that the "bitten apple" is looking to quickly restructure Siri. This virtual assistant has been delayed in upgrading and is said to be having problems integrating modern AI models. The loss to ChatGPT, Google Assistant, and Microsoft Copilot platforms is a great pressure forcing Apple to accelerate its transformation.
