Today's live pig price in the Northern and Central provinces is from 68,000 - 75,000 VND/kg, while in the Southern provinces it is from 74,000 - 78,000 VND/kg. Pig farmers are still making high profits. Talking to Dan Viet, the leader of the largest pig farming company in Vietnam revealed many surprising information about live pig prices.
The price of live pigs today (March 27) in some localities continued to decrease in this morning's session. Currently, the price of live pigs nationwide fluctuates from 68,000 - 78,000 VND/kg.
From North to South, pork prices decrease
Specifically, the Northern region recorded a decrease in live pig prices in Yen Bai, down to 68,000 VND/kg, the same price as in Hanoi, Ha Nam and Tuyen Quang. Meanwhile, in Lao Cai, Hung Yen, Nam Dinh, Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, Thai Binh, live pig prices are all at 69,000 VND/kg.
In the Central Highlands region: Live pig prices continued to decrease, down 1,000 VND/kg in Binh Dinh, Dak Lak and Ninh Thuan, to 71,000 VND/kg, 72,000 VND/kg and 74,000 VND/kg, respectively.
Currently, live pigs in this area are sold for around 70,000 - 75,000 VND/kg, with 75,000 VND/kg appearing in Lam Dong and Binh Thuan.
In the Southern region: Following the general downward trend, the Southern market decreased by 1,000 - 2,000 VND/kg in many provinces. Accordingly, Southern traders are purchasing live pigs at around 74,000 - 78,000 VND/kg. Of which, Ca Mau is currently the province with the highest live pig price in the country, at 78,000 VND/kg.
Talking to Dan Viet, Ms. Ha Thi Tuoi, Phu Cuong commune, Hung Yen city (Hung Yen) is raising 100 pigs and said that in recent days, the price of live pigs in Hung Yen has "cooled down", down to only 68,000 - 69,000 VND/kg.
However, Ms. Tuoi also explained that the sudden increase in pork prices makes many people think that raising pigs is profitable, but in reality it is not like that, because the continuous epidemic situation causes a very high loss rate, and in return, there is not much profit.

When the price of live pigs increases, it will also drag down the price of animal feed, veterinary medicine, etc. The price of breeding pigs even increases faster than the price of pork. Moreover, the disease situation this year is quite complicated, "exploding" in many places and not seasonal, so the disease keeps recurring. Many households have had to hang up their barns for the past few years.
Unexpected revelation about Vietnam's live pig price through a Deputy Director
Mr. Le Xuan Huy, Deputy General Director of CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company, said that normally, CP's pigs must be 29 weeks old or older, with a weight of about 100-115 kg/pig, but to participate in "controlling" the price of live pigs from increasing suddenly, the company had to shorten the breeding time to 23 weeks old, with a weight of only 85-90 kg/pig.
Currently, CP's pigs account for about 12% of Vietnam's total pig herd (equivalent to over 3.5 million pigs).
According to Mr. Huy, the recent increase in pork prices is due to the Law on Livestock, which will take effect from January 1, 2025, which allows livestock farming, leading to many households not meeting the conditions for farming, especially not meeting environmental conditions, leading to having to hang up their pigsties.
"Household farming accounts for 80%, while diseases are rampant, farming costs are increasing, and legal regulations on farming are becoming increasingly strict, causing fewer and fewer households to raise pigs, and a decline in supply is also normal," said Mr. Huy.
In addition, cheap imported meat also partly affects the domestic pork market, making domestic pork prices uncompetitive.
To meet consumers' demand for pork, CP currently exports 16,000 - 18,000 pigs per day to the market.
On March 27, speaking with Dan Viet, Mr. Duong Tat Thang - Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) continued to affirm: "The pig herd is growing very well, in addition to pork, including piglets, the total pig herd in the country is about 30 million".
