The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has issued a document guiding the registration to participate in Asian club tournaments from the 2024-2025 season. Accordingly, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and its members must comply with 6 criteria including professional standards; club licensing system; stadiums; logistics, visa and accommodation issues; sports integrity; and organization of professional football tournaments.
If one of the six criteria is violated, the Asian Football Confederation will cut off Vietnam's direct participation in the Asian Cup at club level. The direct participation will be transferred to another member football federation.

Currently, VFF has not complied with the criteria for organizing professional football tournaments. Specifically, AFC stated that the national championship must be organized in a home-away format. A maximum of 2 teams play at the same home stadium.
Meanwhile, three teams, Hanoi Police Club, Hanoi FC and The Cong Viettel, will play at the same home stadium, Hang Day. This will take place from the 2023 season.
VFF requested Vietnam Football Joint Stock Company (VPF) - the tournament organizer - to review and fully implement AFC regulations.
In the 2024-2025 season, the AFC will organize cup competitions in 3 levels. Level 1 is the AFC Champions League, level 2 is the AFC Cup and level 3 will be added to the competition program.
The AFC will base the ranking of clubs on the national championship rankings. V.League will most likely not have a place in the AFC Champions League but only 1 direct entry and 1 play-off spot in the AFC Cup.
