Enjoying local food is an experience that cannot be missed when traveling, especially in new destinations. To help travelers have more information for their next trips, British magazine Time Out on March 15 announced a list of the 20 best cities to enjoy cuisine.
New Orleans, USA, tops the list thanks to its cuisine, which is a blend of French, Spanish, Vietnamese and African influences. Typical and highly rated dishes include gumbo (chicken or seafood stewed with bell peppers, celery, okra), jambalaya (rice mixed with meat or seafood, with special spices) and beignets (pastries covered in powdered sugar).
Second place goes to Bangkok, Thailand, where diners can find everything from Michelin-starred fine dining to street food markets where dishes cost just a few dollars.
At number three, Medellín, Colombia, impresses with its cheap food and coffee. Cape Town, South Africa, at number four, is where locals love seafood. Madrid is at number five, with locals saying the Spanish capital's cuisine is both "diverse" and "worth trying." At number six, Mexico City has become a top destination for foodies in recent years.
Jollof rice (tomato and chilli rice) and smoky suya (smoked meat skewers) are the pride of Lagos, Nigeria, at number 7. Shanghai, China, where the cuisine has a thousand-year history, xiao long bao or fried dumplings are still mentioned, helping them to rank 8. The French capital is the birthplace of haute cuisine, so it is no surprise that they also ranked 9th on the list. Number 10 belongs to Jakarta, with rendang (spicy beef), one of Indonesia's many delicacies.
The results are based on a global survey of more than 18,500 people. Locals rated their dishes on 18 criteria, including quality, value for money, taste and innovation. Time Out-appointed experts then added additional judging.
The ranking is based on the highest-scoring cities in each country to give a comprehensive assessment of the world's cities. In the 20 cities named, diners will find both traditional and modern dishes, from street stalls to fine dining restaurants.
The remaining 10 names in the top 20 include Marrakech, Morocco (11th), Lima, Peru (12th), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (13th), Mumbai, India (14th), Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (15th), Cairo, Egypt (16th), Porto, Portugal (17th), Montreal, Canada (18th). Naples, Italy (19th), San José, Costa Rica (20th).
