On April 12, 1975, Military Region 9 intensified attacks on enemy bases. The Standing Committee of the Saigon-Gia Dinh City Party Committee issued a resolution to prepare for the campaign and assigned tasks to units and forces to coordinate with the main forces.
On the afternoon of April 12, 1975, at the Saigon Liberation Campaign Command Headquarters in the west of Loc Ninh town, General Van Tien Dung, Politburo member, Chief of the General Staff, Campaign Commander, assigned the 3rd Corps to participate in the Saigon-Gia Dinh liberation campaign.
Preparing for the campaign to liberate Saigon, on the same day, the 320B Division of the 3rd Corps marched to assemble at Dong Xoai.
Also on April 12, 1975, the Standing Committee of the Saigon-Gia Dinh City Party Committee met to discuss and issue a resolution to urgently prepare for the campaign to liberate the city and assign tasks to grassroots units and forces coordinating with the main forces.
The City Party Committee directed preparations for the mass uprising, distributed leaflets, and developed forces; all levels increased cadres, party members, and mass bases. The City Commandos firmly controlled the commando teams and armed masses, and were ready to launch a mass uprising. The forces stationed in the outskirts were ordered to be ready to advance into the inner city.
The logistics force ensuring the Campaign (groups: 210, 814, 235, 220, 230, 240) deployed activities, closely coordinated with the logistics bases in the suburbs and inner city to receive support from the Central Government, building a widespread, interconnected supply formation.
On April 12, 1975, forces of Military Region 9 opened fire and attacked, causing heavy damage to Ba Cang sub-region, Binh Minh sub-region, Dong Thanh sub-region, destroying and forcing the withdrawal of 13 posts, liberating a section of the southern bank of the Hau River. Local troops in Vinh Long destroyed the rear base of the security battalion and My Thuan sub-region, forcing the withdrawal of 12 posts.
At the Can Tho front, on the night of April 12, 1975, Regiment 20 was able to get out of Vong Cung road, but Regiment 10, Regiment 2, due to being blockaded, had to fight fiercely with the enemy, and only got out several days later.
The enemy pursued and swept inside and outside the Vong Cung road to destroy the remaining forces of the city and Can Tho province.
At the same time, they concentrated most of the 4th Corps' forces to protect Can Tho, mobilizing 50% of the agency's soldiers to guard high-rise buildings, outpost positions, and their headquarters.
At 5:00 p.m. on April 12, 1975, the Liberation Army used captured enemy 105mm artillery to fire at Binh Minh sub-region, Cai Von training school, Tra Noc airport, Phong Dinh sub-region, the US Consulate General in Can Tho, the Command Headquarters and the private residence of Nguyen Khoa Nam - Commander of Military Region 4 of the Republic of Vietnam.
