Rebuilding Phu Quoc's image to be worthy of international stature

Not fully exploited potential and advantages

According to the People's Committee of Phu Quoc City, up to now, the locality has attracted 318 valid investment projects with an area of over 10,600 hectares, of which 52 projects have been put into operation with an area of over 1,180 hectares, with a total investment capital of about 17,389 billion VND. Many high-class tourism and entertainment projects of large economic groups have been put into operation and used effectively. The system of high-class resorts with over 24,000 rooms, including 26 hotels meeting 3-5 star standards with over 11,200 rooms.

According to the Department of Tourism's report, in the first 9 months of 2023, the number of visitors to Phu Quoc reached more than 4.7 million (reaching nearly 79% of the annual plan), of which international visitors are estimated to reach over 470,000, with total revenue reaching over 12,000 billion VND (the whole province over 14,500 billion VND). Phu Quoc tourism industry contributes greatly to the provincial budget, truly becoming a key economic sector of the locality.

Phu Quoc is blessed with great potential for tourism development, with many beautiful beaches. This is an extremely favorable factor for the development of resort, entertainment, ecological, sports and adventure tourism. However, the locality has not fully exploited and made the most of these advantages.

Mr. Pham Van Nghiep - Vice Chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee - said that Phu Quoc tourism industry still has certain difficulties such as limited communication and image promotion; the number of international flights to Phu Quoc and vice versa is still low and irregular; security, order, environment, prices, weather, etc. are still erratic.

Rebuilding Phu Quoc's image

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Tuan Hung - Deputy Director of the Southern Institute of Social Sciences - to attract investment and develop sustainable tourism, Phu Quoc needs to complete the master plan, integrate as soon as possible; increase investment, mobilize all resources to complete synchronous and scientific infrastructure to ensure strategic, long-term and sustainable nature. At the same time, increase investment in developing in-depth marine tourism products; promote the development of green and sustainable tourism; need to have programs, create institutions for connection and cooperation and sharing; increase investment in activities to promote investment attraction and sustainable development of marine tourism.

Mr. Nguyen Vu Khac Huy - Permanent Vice President of Kien Giang Tourism Association - shared: In order for Phu Quoc tourism to develop to be on par with the region and the world, there needs to be specific solutions for the local tourism industry and tourism businesses. Phu Quoc also needs to deal with two hot issues: attracting visitors to return, and businesses and tourism workers working together with local authorities to develop tourism.

In addition, authorities at all levels in Phu Quoc need to closely manage and monitor, and have strict sanctions against tourism service providers that rip off and snatch tourists. At the same time, preserve and protect the environment of forests and seas...
