Peach blossom trees follow the Northerners migrating to the Central Highlands to bloom brilliantly every spring on the sunny and windy highlands.
Peach blossom trees "migrate" following the footsteps of expatriates
In the large garden deep at the end of alley 729 Pham Van Dong, Yen The ward (Pleiku city, Gia Lai), hundreds of peach trees are waiting to bloom.
The peach branches have entered the leaf-shedding period, sprouting many small flower buds, the first petals have bloomed pink under the bright yellow sunshine of the Central Highlands.
The bright pink peach garden on the red soil plateau is truly a rare sight, attracting many young men and women in beautiful dresses to visit and take pictures in spring.
Diligently pinching each young leaf to make the tree bloom in time for Tet, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thoa and Mr. Le Van Nghiem were filled with joy, confident that this year they would have a bumper crop of money selling Tet peach blossoms.
Mrs. Thoa diligently pinched each young leaf so that the peach branch could focus its energy on nurturing the flower buds to bloom in time for Tet.
From her hometown Gia Loc, Hai Duong, Mrs. Thoa and her husband migrated to a new land several decades ago, had children and devoted their lives to coffee trees. Nearly ten years ago, when coffee trees provided an unstable income while she was old and no longer healthy, she discussed with her husband selling the fields, returning to a small garden to grow vegetables and raise chickens.
The idea of growing peach blossoms on the highlands suddenly popped into her mind during the days she visited her hometown during Tet. With technical support from her younger brother who specializes in growing peach blossoms in Gia Loc, Hai Duong, the couple started bringing seedlings back to their home garden to practice growing peach blossoms.
Mr. Le Van Nghiem checks the evenness and beauty of the petals when they bloom before the sale date.
After many ups and downs, learning and gaining experience as they worked, the Northern peach trees gradually accepted and took root in the red soil. Over the years, the peach garden expanded from a few dozen trees to 400-500 trees as it is now.
In the home garden, beautiful peach varieties from her hometown of Hai Duong, Thai Binh, and Hanoi such as peach blossom, pink peach, and faded pink... were collected by her husband and brought back to grow and develop quite well, no different from the North.
Springtime in the new land
More than 400 peach blossom trees are in bloom in the couple's garden in Pleiku.
After many years of growing peach blossoms, Mr. Nghiem said that peach trees are also suitable for the Central Highlands. The end of the year season in this region has warm sunshine and the night temperature is not too cold, so the trees do not get hard and the flowers bloom well.
The land is fertile, the petals bloom big and the red color is sometimes more beautiful than the ones imported from the North.
Although the products are unique, the prices at the garden are not much different from those imported from the North. Mr. Nghiem said that the products grown are mainly aimed at the popular segment, serving a wide range of people, the price of each peach tree ranges from a few hundred thousand VND to about 2.5 million VND, rarely higher.
The warm sunshine at the end of the year in the Central Highlands stimulates peach trees to bloom right on Tet.
In addition to families from the North, buyers include government agencies, units and businesses inside and outside the province.
In this area, Mrs. Thoa and Mr. Nghiem are not the only households growing peach trees, but in terms of scale and beauty, no one can surpass them.
Many peach trees have buds and some have early blooming petals.
Ms. Thoa said that in addition to investing in good care, she also has her own secret learned after many failures to take care of peach trees beautifully, blooming right on Tet. With the available experience, in addition to planting for sale, Ms. Thoa and her husband also take care of high-value peach trees that people trust to send to their gardens.
In the days before Tet, from December 20 onwards, the peach garden is bustling with people coming to buy and take pictures, making the garden filled with Tet atmosphere.
Peach blossoms bloom thickly, the flowers are large and bright red, very beautiful.
Although exhausted, many years of taking care of the peach blossom tree and not having enough time to prepare for Tet for the family, the whole family is still happy and proud to bring everyone a bit of Northern spring in a new land.
The couple shared that they are currently growing 1,000 more peach trees and are preparing to rent land to expand their peach garden to serve the Tet holiday needs of people in the area.
