In fact, there have been many cases of secretly filming tourists that have been reported and discovered.
On the afternoon of July 4, the Investigation Police Department of Can Loc District Police (Ha Tinh) announced that the unit had just initiated a case, prosecuted the accused, and detained Nguyen Khac Giang (born in 1987, residing in Nam Hong Ward, Hong Linh Town, Ha Tinh Province) for 3 months for the act of extortion.
According to the investigation agency, around September 2023, Nguyen Khac Giang went to a motel in Hong Linh town pretending to rent a room. Here, Giang installed hidden cameras to record sensitive scenes of guests.
Giang then used a fake Facebook account to contact and text the victim, threatening to post the sensitive footage on social media or send it to the victim’s relatives and friends, with the aim of blackmailing her. With this method, Giang appropriated 11 million VND from the victim.
Last June, VTV reported that a social media account claiming to "specialize in interview content" regularly approached girls in swimsuits at beaches in the areas of Sam Son, Ha Long, and Cat Ba.
The interview question is only one - "Who is the famous person you want to meet the most?", then anyone can answer however they want, sensitive images will be recorded.
Many of the girls interviewed refused, trying to avoid the camera, but in total, more than 700 clips were posted, including clips with swimsuits zoomed in from afar and no interview questions in them.
In July 2019, Tuan Chau Ward Police (Ha Long City, Quang Ninh) received a complaint from a group of tourists visiting Ha Long Bay on the Hung Long 66 QN-6096 ship about the crew's inappropriate behavior.
According to the group of tourists, the crew used their phones to secretly film tourists showering. This sensitive information quickly spread on social media.
The People's Committee of Ha Long City has sent a document requesting the Quang Ninh Inland Waterways Port Authority to refuse to grant a license and suspend the operation of the Hung Long 66 tourist boat with registration number QN-6096 to serve the investigation. After that, the Investigation Police Department of Ha Long City Police, Quang Ninh Province, has stepped in to investigate and clarify the incident.
Secretly filmed more than 10,000 women bathing in a hot spring in Japan
This is a "shocking" incident in Japan in early 2023. Karin Saito (50 years old) admitted to being the ringleader of a network that secretly filmed and shared images of more than 10,000 women bathing in open-air hot springs across Japan over the past 30 years.
16 men were arrested by the police for investigation. These men used hidden cameras in the bushes to film the victims' indecent images, and then held a viewing party.
Saito said he began pursuing his perverted pleasures when he was 20 years old, and visited at least 100 hot springs in Japan. His prey were women bathing in the open-air hot springs.
Saito's tactic was to hide in the mountains a few hundred meters away from the hot springs, then secretly take photos or film with a camera equipped with a telephoto lens.
Police added that the criminals also secretly took photos and videos of the same woman while she was dressed and while she was undressed in the hot springs to compare the images at different times. They created the videos and edited them with subtitles to organize movie parties.
More than a thousand people were secretly filmed in a Korean hotel
In March 2019, four men were arrested in South Korea for allegedly secretly filming 1,600 people in hotels and selling the images on a website.
Mini cameras were installed in TVs, hair dryers and small holes in the room. The men are said to have made $6,200. If convicted, they could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of 30 million won.
BBC quoted police sources as saying that the subjects installed cameras with 1mm lenses in August 2018 at 30 hotels in 10 cities in South Korea.
South Korea has faced similar scandals in the past. In 2017, more than 6,400 cases of illegal filming were reported to police, compared to around 2,400 in 2012.
