Here, Belgian agencies shared information about research funding sources and cooperation opportunities in Belgium, and the Belgian side also listened to the Ministry of Education and Training's sharing on Project 89, Vietnam's education strategy for the period 2019 - 2030 and the potential for training cooperation and student exchange with Belgian partners.
Cooperation between Vietnamese and Belgian universities "gives wings" to research and education
The cooperation between Vietnam and the Kingdom of Belgium in the fields of science, research and training has a long history since the early 1990s. Over the past 30 years, cooperation between the two countries has achieved many great achievements, making important contributions to the socio-economic development of Vietnam, especially in the fields of education, public health, clean water and environmental sanitation.
Belgium has become one of Vietnam’s leading partners in the field of education and training. Thousands of Vietnamese students have received scholarships to study at prestigious Belgian universities, contributing to the training of high-quality human resources for the country. Joint research cooperation programs between universities and research institutes of the two countries have produced practical results, solving urgent problems in Vietnam such as climate change, water resources management, sustainable urban development, and improving health capacity.

Speaking at the event, Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi Le Quan expressed that the series of academic activities and cooperation connections coordinated by Vietnam National University, Hanoi with Belgian partners is an important milestone, looking back at 30 years of successful and fruitful cooperation between the two countries in the fields of science, research and training, while opening up new prospects for cooperation in the future. In particular, the presence of Belgian Ministers and Prime Ministers at the event demonstrated the importance and interest of the Belgian Government in developing educational cooperation with Vietnam.
Over the past time, the cooperative relationship between VNU and Belgian partners has always been maintained and developed through joint research projects and staff and student exchanges. Many joint research projects between VNU and Belgian partners have been successfully implemented, contributing to solving practical problems in the environment, sustainable agriculture, health and community development, resource management, sustainable urban development, sustainable tourism, etc. He believes that with the joint efforts of all parties, along with the support of the two governments, the support from ministries and branches, the cooperation between VNU and Belgian partners will continue to develop strongly, bringing practical benefits to both countries, contributing to the sustainable development of the region and the world.

KU Leuven University Director Luc Sels expressed that the educational cooperation between Vietnam and Belgium has always been maintained and developed sustainably through research cooperation between universities and research institutes of the two countries. He said that in the context of the world experiencing many fluctuations and increasingly complex challenges such as climate change, public health, sustainable development, increasing energy demand, digital transformation, it is necessary to develop and further expand cooperation in academia.
According to Mr. Luc Sels, the Vietnamese and Belgian organizations have established an exemplary model of cooperation, in which both sides contribute and benefit equally. He emphasized the three main pillars of this cooperation: excellence, impact and social engagement. Excellence ensures that research is highly competitive and meets global standards. Impact is the transformation of research results into concrete benefits for communities, businesses and policy makers. Social engagement ensures the relevance, accessibility and contribution of the cooperation to human development.

Director of the Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Education and Training Nguyen Thu Thuy informed the delegates about the Vietnam Education Development Strategy for the period 2019-2030, vision 2045; Project 89. At the same time, she also gave some directions for cooperation with Belgium such as: Cooperation in postgraduate training (master's, doctoral); coordination with the Ministry of Education and Training within the framework of Project 89; Cooperation in scientific research and innovation; seeking financial support from international programs; Promoting student exchange and cultural exchange; promoting short-term programs, Expanding cooperation with Belgian educational organizations and networks...

The workshop heard opinions exchanged and discussed mechanisms and plans to promote and expand research cooperation in the future between Vietnam and Belgium. The implementation of Vietnam - Belgium cooperation in scientific research will also bring many practical benefits.
Successful research collaboration requires appropriate tools and support mechanisms. Vietnam and Belgium have developed funding programmes, mobility mechanisms and institutional support systems to help partnerships flourish. Many argue that further investment in academic partnerships and strengthening of joint funding programmes would enable the expansion and development of innovative and creative solutions to common challenges.
In addition, the two sides will also cooperate in the field of training such as training high-quality human resources through expert and graduate student exchange programs; implementing short-term training courses on advanced technology; transferring knowledge and management experience.
Universities and researchers play a vital role in fostering collaboration, but this will not be possible without support from governments, funding agencies and policymakers. Delegates also noted the need for stronger engagement from both governments to continue investing in academic exchanges, research funding and infrastructure to support long-term collaboration.
VNU strengthens scientific relations and sustainable cooperation with Belgian partners
In recent years, VNU has established strategic partnerships with many leading universities in Belgium, mainly in joint research cooperation in topics and projects; co-organizing conferences and scientific seminars; exchanging staff, lecturers, students and other cultural and academic exchange activities.
In particular, during the visit of the Ministers - Prime Ministers and the delegation of leaders and officials of Belgian universities to VNU, VNU and its units will sign 06 cooperation agreements with Belgian units. Specifically, VNU will sign 02 framework cooperation agreements with KU Leuven University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB); VNU School of Business and Administration will sign 02 cooperation agreements with UCLouvain (Student Exchange Agreement) and with Brussels School of Management - ICHEC (Framework Agreement); University of Technology will sign 01 framework cooperation agreement with KU Leuven University; University of Technology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, VUB and Bach Mai Hospital will sign 01 cooperation agreement on training, research and exchange in the field of digital medicine. The memorandums of understanding between VNU and Belgian partners will contribute to strengthening and creating a more solid legal framework for diverse cooperation activities.

In the coming time, the two sides will carry out joint research projects; co-organize scientific seminars and conferences. Scientists from VNU and Belgian partners will jointly carry out many important research projects, focusing on issues of mutual interest such as resource management, sustainable urban development, sustainable tourism, and information technology...
Every year, VNU students and lecturers will have the opportunity to study and conduct research in Belgium, and vice versa, Belgian colleagues will also come to VNU to exchange experiences and knowledge. At the same time, areas such as digital transformation, renewable energy, climate change adaptation, cyber security, etc. will also be areas where VNU and Belgian partners prioritize strengthening cooperation in the future.

As a multidisciplinary university, VNU always identifies digital medicine as one of the priority directions for development. VNU is proud to have the University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the University of Technology as pioneers in this field, with a team of scientists and lecturers with high expertise, rich experience and enthusiasm. VNU's training units always cooperate and closely associate in research and training with hospitals and businesses to improve and closely link training quality with the practical needs of society.

The workshop "Digital Medicine in the Treatment of Neurodegenerative Disorders: A Global Perspective" held in the afternoon of the same day was an important event, marking the close cooperation between VNU, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Bach Mai Hospital in the field of digital medicine, a field that is making great strides and holds great promise for the future.
