Vietnam earns 52.6 million USD from star anise export in 10 months of 2024

According to statistics from the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), Vietnam's star anise exports in October reached 1,330 tons with a turnover of more than 5.8 million USD, a sharp increase of 88.9% compared to the previous month. India was the largest export market in October with 903 tons, a sharp increase of 121.3% compared to September. Also in October, Prosi Thang Long was the largest exporter with 275 tons, an increase of 205.6% compared to the previous month.

In the first 10 months of 2024, Vietnam exported 11,152 tons of star anise with an estimated turnover of 52.6 million USD, down 13.3% over the same period last year. India continued to be the main export market with 7,395 tons, accounting for 66.3%. The US ranked second with 411 tons and China ranked third with 358 tons.

Leading exporters include: Prosi Thang Long, Tuan Minh, Senspice Vietnam, Hong Son Vietnam and Huy Chuc M&M.

According to statistics, Vietnam's star anise output ranks second in the world, after China, with an estimated annual output of 22,000 tons on a growing area of ​​about 55,000 hectares.

Of which, Lang Son accounts for 72.7% of the area. Star anise grows well in Lang Son due to its suitability to the soil type and high terrain. The people of Lang Son are attached to the star anise forest in a hereditary manner, planting once and harvesting for hundreds of years.

According to the World Spice Association, star anise is a rare spice, found almost exclusively in Vietnam and China, and can only be harvested twice a year. In Vietnam, star anise is grown mainly in northern border provinces such as Lang Son, Cao Bang, etc., bringing high economic value.

Among them, Lang Son is known as the “capital” of star anise in our country with more than 43,000 hectares of star anise, accounting for 70% of the country’s area. Currently, expanding the area of ​​organic star anise is the direction of this locality.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, star anise is one of the high-value agricultural products, popular not only domestically but also in many international markets. Thanks to its characteristic aroma and rich uses in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, Vietnamese star anise has now affirmed its position in the world market.

Vietnamese star anise is consumed strongly in many South Asian regions such as India, Bangladesh, the Middle East, Japan, China and South Korea, the US and EU countries. Of which, India and China are considered the two main export markets of Vietnamese star anise, accounting for 50% and 25% respectively.

Vietnam is a potential supplier to the world spices and flavorings market – worth 21.3 billion USD in 2021 and expected to increase to 27.4 billion USD by 2026.
