(CLO) Ukraine said its forces destroyed a Russian military command post in the southern Zaporizhzhia region, according to video footage of the attack shared on social media.

On December 30, the Ukrainian Military Intelligence Service (HUR) said it had coordinated with the Tavria Group of Forces to "destroy a Russian command post in the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia region," but did not provide details on the specific date and location.

HUR added that through aerial reconnaissance they identified the location of the Russian headquarters. In cooperation with the Tavria Forces Group, they carried out a precision missile strike on the target.

“The operation destroyed the headquarters, killing six Russian personnel and seriously injuring three others,” the report added. The method of attack was not made public, while the “War Translated” account on X posted that the building may have been destroyed by a US-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). The 19-second video shows the attack taking place in broad daylight, with smoke billowing from the building.

Ukraine's claim of a successful attack on a key Russian command post was seen as a morale boost, while Kiev also warned of Moscow's plans for a major offensive in the region.

Russian forces recently entered western Zaporizhzhia amid continued offensive operations in the region, the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said on December 29.

Anton Gerashchenko, a former advisor to the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, wrote on X: "A Russian headquarters was destroyed in the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia region during a joint operation of the Ukrainian Defense Intelligence Service and the Tavria military group. What an honor!".

The pro-Ukrainian news site United 24 also posted on X: "Ukrainian forces have dealt a heavy blow to the Russian occupation forces in Zaporizhzhia".

Ukraine enters 2025 with Russia making steady gains in several frontline areas in Donetsk. Zaporizhzhia, further south, is one of four regions that Russian President Vladimir Putin has annexed, but it is not yet fully under Moscow’s control.

Sources say Russia is preparing to attack southern Ukraine, with plans to intensify military activity in the Zaporizhzhia region and the right bank of the Kherson River. Ukrainian military officials say the main Russian offensive could target the Pyatykhatky region along the Dnipro River and near Hulyaipole.
