It was July 11, 1995 (Washington DC time), when US President Bill Clinton announced the normalization of relations between the two countries. Just a few weeks later, embassies were opened in Hanoi and Washington DC, laying the foundation for a relationship that has grown deeper and more dynamic over the years.
In a video clip released to mark the start of this important anniversary year, US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper emphasized that through dialogue and strengthening ties, we have built trust and mutual respect by working together to address legacy issues from the war, making strong strides through promoting trade and investment, enhancing health cooperation, and expanding educational exchange programs to bring our peoples closer together.
From war to friendship, and now Comprehensive Strategic Partnership: Vietnam is now one of America's leading trading partners in Southeast Asia, the largest source of international students in ASEAN, and an important partner in maintaining regional security, stability, and prosperity.
Together we are writing a new chapter of collaboration and tackling global challenges like climate change and health security. Together we are driving innovation through technology and education.
US Consul General Susan Burns sent a message to the young generation of Vietnam: "We expect you to continue to be a strong bridge between the two countries. I believe that with close cooperation, our future will be brighter than ever."
That is why the United States is investing in the future of the US-Vietnam partnership through expanding education and exchange programs like the Fulbright Scholarship in science and technology.
“Together, we are building a healthier future by enhancing cooperation on health security, increasing trade and investment in healthcare, and addressing emerging public health challenges. This cooperation also includes joint efforts to reduce plastic waste, improve climate resilience, promote renewable energy, and conserve Vietnam’s precious biodiversity, to protect and improve the current and future environment for you and your families,” said Ms. Susan Burns.
"Thank you for being a part of this amazing journey. And let's look forward to the next 30 years of friendship, collaboration and shared success," said US Ambassador Marc Knapper.
