VietnamWorks inTECH (VietnamWorks' IT jobs and recruitment) has just published a report on the current situation and trends of IT recruitment in 2023 with a survey of a total of 1,464 people, including IT candidates and businesses nationwide.
Re-hiring hundreds of staff/projects
Accordingly, in 2023, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are the two major cities with many job opportunities, so they will be most affected by the economic recession. Specifically, Ho Chi Minh City has the highest rate of IT staff cuts (22.2%). Hanoi has a lower rate of staff cuts but focuses on cutting salaries, bonuses or other benefits of employees (accounting for 14.7%).

Although affected by a wave of massive layoffs, from the end of 2023 to 2024, businesses in cities still have a need to recruit IT personnel, each business from 10 to 30 employees, of which Hanoi accounts for the highest rate of 53.3%.
Meanwhile, IT Outsource/Consulting businesses (supporting outsourcing of technology projects for customers) tend to continuously recruit staff for each project in larger numbers, ranging from 50-100 people.
According to this survey, among 15 IT job positions, the 3 positions that businesses are most interested in are software developer (17.4% of businesses need), tester/QA-QC (person checking, detecting errors, person responsible for product quality, quality manager 9.3%) and business analyst (7.4%).
Need someone who can multitask
Mr. Cai Dang Son, Director of Product and Technical Development Department of Navigos Group, said: "In the period of economic stability, the recruitment needs of IT enterprises almost explode to serve the growth, so IT personnel are always focused on and 'sought after' by enterprises. However, enterprises will set higher requirements. Recruiting high-quality personnel, with sufficient expertise, foreign languages and soft skills to meet the job requirements is currently a big challenge for enterprises".
Specifically, Product Owner/Product Manager, Full-stack developer, and DevOps engineer are the top three positions that businesses find difficult to fill. Additionally, when asked about difficult-to-fill positions, 89.9% of businesses said it was difficult to find candidates for senior positions and above.
According to Mr. Son, in the coming time, businesses will focus more on recruitment quality, have stricter requirements, prioritize multi-tasking candidates, can take on many jobs and have high experience.
Therefore, IT employees who intend to change jobs will have to consider more carefully in their decision. In addition, candidates looking for a new job also tend to choose companies with less fluctuations by reducing their expectations about salary, benefits, and working environment. In addition, IT workers also proactively seek to improve their skills, expertise, update new technologies and new programming languages to meet business requirements," Mr. Son said.
