Dr. Bui Tran Phuong - former principal of Hoa Sen University - said that choosing a university is one of the most important choices for young people.

'Baggage' new students must remember

According to Ms. Phuong, the "minimum" condition for new students to be able to study well at university is discipline and self-awareness. "The second is having a foreign language, meaning being able to use a foreign language fluently to study at university. If you start studying early and really have the will to learn, a foreign language can completely become a second language. But to do that, students must have the ability to self-study," Dr. Bui Tran Phuong emphasized.

According to Dr. Bui Tran Phuong, no matter where you study, students need to listen attentively to lectures, take notes, and ask questions... In addition, students should know how to read more books and find knowledgeable people to listen to their opinions.

Dr. Le Minh Cong - Director of the Center for Research and Support of Mental Health, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - said that in any profession, learning by interest and doing by instinct is not enough, but must be professionally trained and guided.

Dr. Le Minh Cong suggests that students should learn how to balance personal skills and professional skills.

"In college, you should learn how to present yourself fluently and convincingly in front of a crowd. You can practice this through writing and improving your foreign language skills. Only by thoroughly understanding the knowledge you learn in class can you put it into practice. Practicing professional skills early through practical sessions can help you become good at your job when you graduate," said Dr. Le Minh Cong.

According to Dr. Ha Thanh Van - Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, in addition to learning necessary skills, students need to grasp opportunities in the classroom. They should make the most of their internship time at businesses, agencies, etc. to gain experience and build relationships for future work.

"A suitable part-time job can help you both learn knowledge and earn extra income to cover tuition fees, and strengthen your resume when looking for a job. It also helps you get acquainted with and integrate into the real working environment, meeting the job requirements of employers when you go to work," Dr. Ha Thanh Van advised.

College Ready

Before registering for university in 2024, Cao Nguyen Khanh An - a former student of Quang Ngai Province Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities - proactively learned about careers and asked about the university experiences of his seniors.

Khanh An believes that independence is an important skill that helps you feel less overwhelmed. She is also practicing speaking Mandarin to integrate into the university environment.

During this time, you are preparing to take the English certificate (TOEIC) and office information technology (MOS) exams. Khanh An said that you registered for your first choice and were admitted to the law major at Ho Chi Minh City University of Law.

Huynh Ngoc Xuan Thy was born blind but was determined to enroll in the social work program at the Ho Chi Minh City Academy of Officials. According to Xuan Thy, she previously encountered many obstacles in finding suitable centers, shelters or schools.

The paperwork and admission procedures are also difficult. Therefore, you want to become a social worker to help people in the same situation as you to go to school.

You said that going to university was your choice to study the major you love.

Xuan Thy shared: "Studying at university is not just about taking notes, doing exercises, memorizing, and taking exams... but more importantly, self-study. I know that the university journey is still very long with many difficulties such as writing essays, conducting scientific research surveys, debating presentations... There are many challenges, but I never give up."

Online college

Dr. Bui Tran Phuong said there are many ways to study at university. Nowadays, many young people are pursuing online learning on the Internet or studying in free programs. Students choose their own subjects and teachers.

"When studying online, you must know how to make your own plan to follow, control yourself and overcome the obstacles you encounter, because at that time you are the only student. Reality shows that successful online learners are often those who are self-disciplined and have the ability to self-study. But also note that there are countless programs that are not of good quality," Dr. Bui Tran Phuong said.

Don't choose school and major carelessly.

Dr. Le Minh Cong advised young people not to choose a school or major superficially because it can easily lead to discouragement. They must research carefully and study systematically to strengthen their abilities and create momentum for their future development.

"Once you have chosen a suitable major, persistently pursuing it can help you expand your development area. From there, you can promote your abilities and contribute to the community and society. The important thing is to determine the right path to reach the end of your career," emphasized Dr. Le Minh Cong.
