For many years, bamboo shoots have become a specialty product of Yen Bai province in general and Van Chan district in particular, favored by consumers inside and outside the province among many types of bamboo shoots on the market. Therefore, from passive exploitation from natural forests, harvesting based on experience, Van Chan people have proactively planted bamboo shoots, planned areas with bamboo shoots in the forests to actively care for them, turning bamboo shoots into economic crops, bringing in a good source of income for many households of ethnic groups: Mong, Kho Mu, Dao. After Tet, when the first spring rains seep down, it is also the time when plump bamboo shoots compete to grow from the ground.
People in the highland villages of Nam Lanh, Nghia Son, An Luong, Cat Thinh… are busy harvesting and transporting bamboo shoots for consumption, helping people living in the forest to have a stable income. Although the bamboo shoot harvest season only lasts about 3 to 4 months (from January to April of the lunar calendar), it has become the most prosperous season of the year. Televisions, motorbikes and expensive living amenities are all made from bamboo shoots.
Mr. Hang Giang Sinh in Khe Ken village, Cat Thinh commune shared: "Previously, my family only knew about the season of going to the forest to harvest bamboo shoots, but the distance was far and depended on the weather, so we only had enough to eat. After the government's propaganda and mobilization, my family took the initiative to grow bamboo shoots, gradually increasing the area to 2 hectares. Growing bamboo shoots does not require much investment in fertilization like other crops, the main cost is clearing the fields. The output is also quite favorable because traders come to the village to buy at market prices. On average, each bamboo shoot season, my family harvests about 5 tons of bamboo shoots, earning 70 million VND. Thanks to bamboo shoots, my family has escaped poverty for many years now."
Accompanying the people, Van Chan district has also identified bamboo shoots as one of the valuable crops, suitable for the natural conditions and cultivation level of the people; from there, promulgated and actively implemented the Project to Support the Development of Bamboo Shoots Raw Material Areas for the period 2021 - 2025 to support funding for households and groups of households participating in growing bamboo shoots with an area of 0.1 ha or more, planting density of 500 trees/ha or more, support level of 2 million VND/ha.
The district also provides technical guidance on production, evaluation, and selection of bamboo shoots for seeds to ensure adequate supply of quality seeds, contributing to improving the productivity and quality of bamboo shoots. Up to now, the district has supported people in 4 communes in the Project including: An Luong, Suoi Quyen, Nam Lanh, Nghia Son to plant 58 hectares of new bamboo shoots, forming a bamboo shoot raw material area of over 200 hectares, with an average output of 600 tons/year in these localities.
Mr. Luong Van Si - Chairman of Nghia Son Commune People's Committee said: "From the Project to support the development of bamboo shoot material areas of the district, the commune has mobilized people to plant 44 hectares of bamboo shoots, increasing the area of bamboo shoots in the whole commune to nearly 60 hectares. Currently, bamboo shoots are growing and developing quite well, it is expected that next year's bamboo shoot season will start to harvest the entire area, increasing the current bamboo shoot output from over 25 tons to double and gradually increase many times over time when the bamboo shoots have developed stably. This will be the motivation for Nghia Son people to continue to reduce poverty and build new rural areas in the locality".
At the same time, the district also mobilized resources to support the establishment of cooperatives and cooperative groups to form concentrated production areas with high and stable quality; build the "Van Chan Bamboo Shoots" certification brand, which is expected to have intellectual property rights established in 2025, contributing to increasing value and stabilizing the consumption market.
In addition to being a tree that helps people escape poverty and become rich, bamboo shoots have also become a type of bamboo shoot that many gourmets have voted as one of the most delicious bamboo shoots of the mountains and forests. The bamboo shoots are dense, crunchy, sweet, and have no smell. They can be used to make many delicious dishes with a unique flavor that has created a separate brand for bamboo shoots with the name "specialty" only available after Tet in the highlands of Yen Bai.
