Exploitation associated with protection of resources and environment

Binh Thuan is a coastal province in the South Central region, with more than 192km of coastline stretching over 7/10 districts, towns and cities; with a territorial sea area of 52,000km2. With such potential, the province has many advantages to develop the marine economy with activities such as: tourism, renewable energy (onshore and offshore wind power, solar power...), aquaculture development, fishing and seafood processing...

Thanks to the effective management and use of marine resources on the basis of exploitation combined with protection of resources and the environment, up to now, the marine tourism industry has become a spearhead economic sector and a pillar of socio-economic development of Binh Thuan province. In particular, Binh Thuan has now become one of the largest marine tourism centers in the country. At the same time, Binh Thuan is also one of the three largest seafood fishing grounds in the country.

Specifically, in recent years, Binh Thuan province has identified marine tourism as one of the local spearhead breakthrough industries, so it has focused all investment resources to effectively exploit its inherent potential and advantages. Accordingly, in addition to organizing a review of coastal land use structure; establishing coastal land use planning; increasing land allocation and leasing to implement tourism projects, the province also strictly implements regulations on environmental impact assessment (EIA) for coastal tourism projects; focuses on strictly controlling direct waste sources from service and tourism areas... along the coast; ensuring that wastewater must be treated to meet technical standards before being discharged into the sea...

Up to now, Binh Thuan has nearly 200 invested tourism projects; there are nearly 600 tourist accommodation establishments with over 17,500 rooms. Tourism development has created stable jobs for about 22,300 workers from many localities in the province.

In addition, not only developing tourism, Binh Thuan has also initially promoted the effectiveness of the offshore exploitation model, associated with logistics services, purchasing, preliminary processing, preserving products at sea, building a model of solidarity groups for seafood exploitation. Thanks to investing in large-capacity ships that stay at sea for long periods, every year, Binh Thuan fishermen exploit about 180,000 tons of various types of seafood. Along with that, aquaculture and seafood farming have also developed strongly, with an estimated annual aquaculture output of nearly 15,000 tons... With the achieved results, the aquaculture and seafood fishing industry not only contributes to increasing income and improving people's lives but also contributes to promoting socio-economic development.

Prioritize green development, friendly to marine environment

Mr. Phan Van Dang - Vice Chairman of Binh Thuan Provincial People's Committee said: For many years, Binh Thuan has always determined the goal of developing the marine economy in a sustainable direction, on the basis of exploiting marine resources in depth, ensuring long-term stability, not encroaching or damaging the values of the sea and islands. At the same time, developing the marine economy sustainably on the basis of green growth.

The aquaculture and fishing industry not only contributes to increasing people's income, but also contributes to the local socio-economic growth.

Accordingly, in the coming time, in addition to focusing on managing and effectively exploiting marine resources, Binh Thuan province will continue to synchronously deploy solutions to develop the marine economy in a sustainable manner associated with environmental protection. Specifically, the province will focus on investing in developing infrastructure and technical facilities for the tourism industry for key localities and driving forces for coastal and island tourism development of the province; encourage and create conditions for economic sectors to participate in developing complex tourism areas, large-scale tourism projects, high-quality shopping and entertainment centers, types of eco-tourism, scientific exploration, community tourism, etc.

At the same time, focus on developing the province's seaports according to the national sector planning to meet the requirements of industrialization, modernization, integration and international competition. Continue to coordinate with functional agencies to search for and explore minerals in the sea, coastal and island areas under the province's management. Promote the development of offshore fishing; strongly transform the farming of high-value aquatic products towards concentrated industry, applying clean farming technology...

In addition, Binh Thuan will continue to invest in infrastructure and equipment for the collection and treatment of solid waste and wastewater to meet environmental standards in residential areas and key areas of the province. Coordinate with relevant agencies to build a closed model for the collection, classification, treatment and reuse of wastewater, domestic solid waste and hazardous waste in coastal and island areas of the province.

At the same time, implement the planning of industrial parks, industrial clusters and coastal urban areas in a sustainable direction based on ecosystems, intelligently adapting to climate change and rising sea levels, with centralized wastewater systems that meet environmental standards and regulations.

Continue to implement programs, projects, tasks to restore and develop coral reef ecosystems, seagrass beds, mangrove forests, coastal protection forests; organize research, carry out investment in construction, strengthen forces, equipment for monitoring, supervision, forecasting, and automatic warning systems on marine environmental quality, effectively respond to pollution issues, marine environmental incidents, associated with ensuring national defense, security, and social order and safety in the province.
