BHG - Taking advantage of the potential of land, climate and terrain, in recent times, people in Ho Thau commune (Hoang Su Phi) have actively developed a model of goat farming towards commodities. Thanks to that, many households have not only improved their income but also gradually escaped poverty and strived to become rich sustainably. Along with that, the local government is also promoting support policies, encouraging the building of the "clean goat" brand, contributing to increasing product value and creating stable output for farmers.

In 2005, the first herds of goats appeared in Ho Thau, with a total herd of only a few dozen. The goat farming model quickly opened up a new and effective economic direction for the people in the commune, and the number of households developing the model continuously multiplied.

Thanks to the hilly terrain and the family's forest of over 7 hectares, since 2015, Mr. Trieu Choi Lua, Tan Phong village, Ho Thau commune, has started a business to develop the raising of 15 goats, one of the typical households in the development of goat raising in Ho Thau commune. Currently, his family has more than 50 goats. Because they are completely grazed naturally and the quality of goat meat is guaranteed, traders from Ninh Binh province come to his house twice a year to buy goats, each year also bringing in an income of over 80 million VND. From the practical knowledge learned through successful goat raising models and knowledge from professional agencies, Mr. Lua has gradually expanded the scale of developing his family's goat herd. From 2015 to now, Mr. Lua's family's goat herd has always maintained from 40 to more than 60 goats.

Raising goats brings high economic efficiency to many households in Ho Thau commune.
Raising goats brings high economic efficiency to many households in Ho Thau commune.

Using mountain cliffs as barns and using tarpaulins to cover them is an effective method of Mr. Phuong Choi Phu, Tan Thanh village, Ho Thau commune, when he started developing a goat farming model. With the semi-free range farming method, his family can reduce the cost of food and care. Currently, he maintains a herd of over 50 goats, of which 2/3 are breeding goats. With a breeding cycle of 2-3 litters/year, Mr. Phu sells about 30 goats to the market every year, the selling price ranges from 110 - 130,000 VND/kg, the total revenue from the model is estimated at nearly 90 million VND. Mr. Phu shared: “My family develops a variety of integrated crop and livestock farming models, with the aim of “taking short-term, raising long-term”. Goat farming is identified as the main economic model because of its high profits and more stable prices compared to pig and chicken farming. The farming process is also convenient because the food source is available on the hill, not requiring high technology”.

In addition to developing household-scale goat farming, in recent years, Mr. Lua's family, Mr. Phu's family and many other goat-raising households in Ho Thau commune have joined together to develop the village and commune's goat herd in the direction of commodities, contributing to improving the efficiency of livestock farming, together grasping the needs of the market and not being forced to lower prices by traders. In addition, when joining together in livestock farming, households will support each other in terms of capital, livestock farming techniques, disease prevention, food sources and breeds when necessary. It is known that when the group was first established, there were only more than 100 goats. After many years of operation, the total herd of goats of the group has grown to more than 1,000; the livestock barns are solidly built, ensuring cleanliness and ventilation...

Comrade Hoang Duc Ton, Chairman of Ho Thau Commune People's Committee said: "Currently, in Ho Thau Commune, there is 1 hobby group and 2 breeding groups supporting each other in the process of raising goats. The establishment of groups has helped families gather together, learn how to do business and support poor households to have conditions to develop livestock, rise up to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty. Every month, the group meets once, members exchange experiences in raising livestock, ways to prevent and control diseases for goats according to the season and time. Through group activities, members also increasingly strengthen solidarity, helping each other to progress in all aspects, from production and breeding experience to building happy families".

In Ho Thau commune, the goat farming model has developed effectively with a total herd of 1,405 goats, with nearly 120 households raising goats concentrated in 8 villages. Most households maintain semi-grazing to reduce labor costs and take advantage of food sources. Many families have a stable income of 50 - 100 million VND/year, such as the households of Trieu Choi Lua, Trieu Choi Guyen, Phuong Choi Phu...

From the livestock models that bring high economic efficiency, the goat farming development movement in Ho Thau commune is increasingly expanding. Many households in the area have converted from small-scale livestock farming to livestock farming on a larger scale, bringing stable income.
