Because her parents are often sick, Tho Y Cu, a Mong ethnic female student in Tri Le commune, Que Phong district (Nghe An province), understands the value of caring for and treating the sick.

Constantly striving to study, Y Cu dreams of becoming a good doctor to treat his relatives, help his family and society.

The first female Mong student passed the entrance exam to Hanoi Medical University

After 4 hours of traveling hundreds of kilometers, we arrived at the home of Tho Y Cu, a 12A3 student at Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities No. 2 – the first female Mong student to pass the entrance exam to Hanoi Medical University.

I was born in Na Nieng village, a remote village of Tri Le commune, Que Phong district, one of the poorest districts in the country.

The family has 4 children, the parents are farmers, but in the village, when mentioning the family, many people admire the spirit of overcoming difficulties to study, having 3 children who all passed the exam and studied at the Ethnic Boarding High School No. 2.

With a desire to go to school, Ý Cu tried hard to study well since childhood. In particular, while her peers mainly focused on social subjects, she really liked studying Math.

Ý Cu's first math lessons were simple multiplications that his father often asked him when he first entered primary school.

In junior high school, studying at the district's boarding school, with the support of teachers, I won the Math prize at the district's excellent student competition and was able to compete at the provincial level.

In grade 10, the first year of studying at the Ethnic Boarding High School No. 2, Y Cu won the Encouragement Prize in Mathematics for the school's excellent students.

Y Cu always dreamed of passing the entrance exam to Hanoi Medical University, becoming a doctor to treat his father and everyone else.

Determined as I am, although I am good at Math, my Chemistry and Biology skills are only at the "intro" level, meaning I can do exercises at the level of recognition, understanding and mainly theory.

To make up for this knowledge gap, 3 months before the High School Graduation Exam, I only slept 3-4 hours a day; besides proactively asking for support from teachers at school, I asked my friends and spent time studying on my own.

By the last trial test, Ý Cu was more confident because his scores had improved. In the official exam, he demonstrated his full potential and achieved an 8 in Math; an 8.75 in Chemistry and a 9 in Biology.

With a fairly high score, plus priority points, Ý Cu was admitted to the Faculty of General Medicine - Hanoi Medical University (Thanh Hoa campus). In Tri Lễ commune, she was the first female Hmong student to be admitted to Hanoi Medical University.

Continue writing the dream of becoming a doctor

“The tuition fee at Hanoi Medical University is so high, can I transfer to a cheaper school?” His father's question made Tho Y Cu ponder for a long time.

She longed to go to school and become a doctor to cure and save people, but her family's ability could hardly support her. That thought not only made Y Cu but also her parents restless at night.

More than a week after the universities announced their admission scores and officially accepted them, Tho Y Cu still did not know whether she could go to university or not. She also thought about having to quit her job and stay home to help her parents. Because the tuition fee for one year alone was 27 million VND, not to mention the daily living expenses, her family could not afford to pay for her to go to school.

Receiving information that a female student of the H'Mong ethnic minority, Tho Y Cu, the first female student from the poor Na Nieng village, Tri Le commune, Que Phong district, Nghe An province, had passed the entrance exam to the Hanoi Medical University, Thanh Hoa branch, but due to difficult family circumstances, she might miss her dream of becoming a doctor to save lives, many organizations and individuals promptly encouraged and gave her gifts to support her with a total amount of nearly 10 million VND.

On September 4, 2024, the representative of the "Supporting doctors to school" scholarship fund of Doan Lam Cosmetic, Dr. Tran Doan Lam, visited and verified the information and family circumstances of Tho Y Cu.

In recognition of her efforts to excel in her studies, the Scholarship Fund has decided to sponsor Tho Y Cu with a 100% tuition scholarship for 6 years of study and a 100% living expense scholarship for 6 years of study at Hanoi Medical University, Thanh Hoa branch (4 million VND/month).

Teacher Le Lan Thuong, Y Cu's homeroom teacher, commented that she is very obedient, diligent, and modest. Despite her difficult family circumstances, she always tries to excel in her studies. Not only is she a diligent student, she also actively participates in activities organized by her class and the school. During her studies and life at school, Y Cu is very friendly and always enthusiastically helps her friends. Recently, she was honored to be in the ranks of the Party.

Mr. Lu Van Cuong, Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, said that Tri Le is one of the 60 poor communes in the country. The whole commune has 2,200 households, of which 1,332 are poor households and 522 are near-poor households, with many difficulties. Y Cu's family is near-poor but has a tradition of studiousness, all of her children are obedient and good at studying. Her admission to Hanoi Medical University is not only the pride of her family but also the joy of the villagers. Her example of studiousness will contribute to encouraging students in the commune to strive and study well so that they can return to develop and build their hometown and village in the future.

These days, the small house in Na Nieng village is filled with laughter and happiness. Thanks to the generosity of benefactors, Y Cu’s dream of becoming a doctor is gradually becoming a reality.

“I am very grateful to the kind-hearted people who have understood, supported, and helped my dream come true. I will try to study well, gain experience, and gain more knowledge to become a good doctor, treat many people, and be useful to society,” Tho Y Cu said emotionally./.
