Accordingly, the People's Committee of An Giang province requested agencies, units and localities to strengthen propaganda on methods and tricks of criminals using Deepfake technology to defraud and appropriate property via social networks, in order to raise awareness and vigilance among cadres, civil servants, public employees, students, workers and the masses against this type of crime. In particular, the Provincial Police Department monitors, guides and coordinates with relevant agencies to prevent, detect, combat and handle violations of the law by criminals using high technology.
When receiving any message or video call with an unstable, unclear signal to borrow money, you need to call directly to the recipient's phone number to verify. Do not call via social networking applications, such as: Zalo, Messenger, Viber, Telegram ..., because these accounts may have been taken over. In case of suspicion of impersonation to defraud and appropriate property, you need to immediately report to the nearest police station for timely support and handling.
Recently, the situation of fraud and property appropriation crimes on the Internet continues to be complicated with many methods and tricks that are increasingly sophisticated and difficult to detect. The subjects have taken advantage of Deepfake technology to fake calls to appropriate property.
First, the subject creates a fake social network account with the same information and profile picture as the user or takes over the user's social network. Then, they collect personal information, images, videos with voice posted publicly on the social network account and use Deepfake technology to create animations and fake videos of the user talking online with the same face, voice tone and form of address.
To gain the victim's trust, the subject uploaded an available Deepfake video to the video call channel, making the victim recognize the image and voice of an acquaintance and quickly transfer money as requested by the subject.
Although there have been no cases of people being scammed using Deepfake technology in An Giang, it is predicted that this type of crime will continue to grow strongly in the coming time, seriously affecting social order and safety.
