Statement before "G hour" of an experienced American voter

Báo Quốc TếBáo Quốc Tế05/11/2024

Knowing the American people, when asked how he felt about this presidential election and who he would vote for, Mr. Bill - a person who has witnessed 10 races to the White House - answered very quickly and decisively: Very interesting and he would vote for candidate Kamala Harris.

One late fall morning just before the national election on November 5, I drove out of Washington DC at 4am. The fog was hazy in the magical streetlights. Yet as I exited the side street onto the freeway, traffic was still flowing.

The reason I had to leave early was because last night I had an appointment to meet Mr. Bill in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at 9am. This is one of the five battleground states in previous US presidential elections. Pennsylvania is no exception in this election, and will contribute to deciding the fateful final "fight" tomorrow night between Ms. Kamala Harris and Mr. Donald Trump.

Prediction before "G hour"

Up to this point, my sociological survey, asking directly from the American people and watching the media, I felt that the race would be very dramatic until the last minute. So I called Bill, my long-time friend in Philadelphia. I wanted to meet him in Philadelphia to consult with him and to see for myself how the people of the state of Pennsylvania supported Kamala.

When the car entered Pennsylvania, the sky was already bright. From afar, I saw a series of billboards erected on the roadside talking about early voting and official election day in Pennsylvania and predicting that this year's voter turnout would be a record high.

Bill and I have been friends for a long time. He is almost 70 years old, a man who has worked in various jobs in the Pennsylvania state government for decades. When he retired at age 67, he opened a law office in downtown Philadelphia nearly 3 years ago. So he knows the people of Pennsylvania and the local government very well.

Knowing Americans and not wanting to waste time, I went straight to the point and asked him how he felt about this presidential election. It was very interesting - he answered quickly and concisely. I asked who he would vote for? Kamala Harris, he answered me softly but firmly.

I asked why he wanted Kamala to be President. He replied: As you know, Ms. Harris is 59 years old, the first woman of color to be selected as the presidential candidate of a major party in the United States - the Democratic Party. You probably also know that on August 26, 2020, American women celebrated the 100th anniversary of the addition of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution that: Women have equal rights with men.

Also on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, at the end of 2020, on November 3, 2020, Ms. Kamala Harris was honored as the highest-ranking female elected official in US history - she was approved as Vice President of the United States and took office on January 20, 2021. On September 8, 2024, Vice President Harris' campaign announced a new policy platform titled "A New Way Forward".

I asked him whether a woman could take on the responsibility of America - a leading country in the world? Mr. Bill said, I think she has a lot of foreign affairs experience and knows how to solve America's problems. Because Ms. Kamala Harris is a typical and intelligent woman. As for the policies and key points of the goals of the Kamala Harris-Tim Waltz administration if elected, she has clearly stated them.

Expect a new breeze

Mr. Bill said he wanted a change in America, so that women would have the opportunity to become President. Since the nation was founded in 1776, 248 years have passed and no woman has held this position.

Explaining the reason why he supported and voted for Kamala Harris, Mr. Bill said that through 46 US Presidents, he has witnessed more than ten Presidents, between the election and implementation of candidates, it is not always true to the commitment.

Furthermore, a President leading a world-leading superpower needs a commander who knows how to restrain himself and is less prone to excessive anger. In addition, the President should not replace personnel in the White House apparatus like changing clothes. It is difficult for such a President to have a common voice and to unite a multi-racial, pluralistic, and separated-power country like the United States. With such an argument, Mr. Bill believes that to overcome and handle the above problems well, candidate Kamala Harris would be more suitable.

When I asked about Kamala Harris's domestic policies, Bill said that Kamala Harris has a deep understanding of social democratic ideology. That is the meaning of the two Ps that have always gone together in American economic policies since the 1960s. The two letters "P and P" stand for "Poverty and Priorities" in English, meaning "poverty and priorities".

That policy is an application of Harrington's social democratic ideology in his work "The Other America" published in the early 1960s. This policy has been applied by many US presidents, from Kennedy to Obama to Joe Biden. And in Kamala Harris's election policy, she also affirmed that she will continue to do so for the poor and low-income people because she clearly understands that poverty is the cause of all social evils.

Economically, Ms. Harris's administration plans to cut taxes for more than 100 million working-class and middle-class Americans, reducing the cost of living through measures such as tax relief for families with children and low- and middle-income earners.

On reproductive rights, Harris pledged to sign legislation restoring federal abortion rights if it passes Congress. On immigration, her administration would restore bipartisan immigration legislation. On foreign policy, Harris also said she would be ready to confront differences, protect American interests and forces from threats from Iran, and ensure America wins the competition of the 21st century.

After two hours, our conversation seemed to be largely focused on Kamala Harris and change in America. As for whether or not people out there think the same way, you'll definitely find out by the end of the day, November 5, US time.

To conclude the story of the upcoming US Presidential election, I suddenly remember the saying of American sociologist Harington: "There are always two Americas within America." It is true, because if you look at the US Presidential election from both sides, you will see that clearly.
