Officers of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tuan Giao district guide the family of Mr. Lo Van Anh, Pha Nang village, Quai Nua commune, to take care of the mango garden.

Tuan Giao district has identified the development of high-quality fruit trees as one of the main economic development directions associated with the implementation of the Project on Restructuring the Agricultural Sector and Building New Rural Areas. In recent years, the district has integrated and effectively used many capital sources to implement 56 fruit tree planting projects in the direction of linking value chains with a total area of 484.2 hectares. Including: 248.1 hectares of mango; 52.9 hectares of jackfruit; 22 hectares of late-ripening longan; 80.9 hectares of pear; 66.9 hectares of grapefruit; 13.4 hectares of purple passion fruit. The fruit tree planting area is concentrated in the communes of Quai Nua, Quai Cang, Pu Nhung, Rang Dong, Mun Chung, Na Tong with a total area of 620 hectares. Many areas have been harvested, including 3 hectares of fruit trees with planting area codes. In the first 6 months of 2023, Tuan Giao district sold over 100 tons of mangoes to the Central Fruit and Vegetable Company, with a selling price of 7,500 - 10,500 VND/kg.

The target of the Resolution of the Tuan Giao District Party Congress by 2025 is that the whole district will have 1,000 hectares of fruit trees. However, after many years of rapid development, Tuan Giao District has re-evaluated factors related to fruit tree development such as: Market breadth, agricultural structure, people's care capacity, land fund... On that basis, at the mid-term review conference of 2020 - 2025, the Tuan Giao District Party Committee adjusted the reduction of 400 hectares of fruit trees compared to the Resolution of the Congress. Specifically, by 2025, the whole district will focus on caring for and sustainably developing 600 hectares of fruit trees.

Discussing this issue, Ms. Pham Thi Tuyen, Vice Chairman of Tuan Giao District People's Committee said: Adjusting the target of reducing the area of fruit trees is appropriate. In recent years, the rapid expansion of fruit tree areas has caused some areas to not have enough resources for people to care for, protect and develop, so the productivity, output and quality of fruit are not guaranteed. From now until 2025, the district will focus resources on developing the existing area of fruit trees in a stable and sustainable manner; ensuring that the orchards have good productivity and quality. At the same time, focusing on trade promotion and building production linkages to create stable output for products.

Quai Nua is one of the communes selected by Tuan Giao district to develop a high-quality fruit growing area. After about 5 years of implementation, Quai Nua commune has now formed a concentrated fruit growing area with an area of over 10 hectares. After re-evaluating the current situation and development potential, Quai Nua commune decided not to expand the fruit growing area.

Mr. Lo Van Tuan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quai Nua Commune, said: The rapid expansion of the area has caused many households to not have enough resources to take care of the orchard. In early 2023, after recording the situation of some fruit tree areas that were not well cared for and had low fruit yield, the People's Committee of the commune launched a campaign to propagate and mobilize households to focus on taking care of the orchard. At the same time, coordinate with the transaction office of the Social Policy Bank of Tuan Giao district to create conditions to support households to access preferential credit sources to have resources to continue taking care of the orchard. Quai Nua Commune decided not to expand the area of fruit trees.

Mr. Lo Van Anh, Pha Nang village, Quai Nua commune said: Since 2018, my family has planted 200 Taiwanese mango trees. Up to now, the mango garden has begun to harvest. I really want to expand the mango acreage, but because my family's agricultural land area is limited. Besides, the commune's policy is not to expand the fruit tree acreage, so my family focuses on caring for and sustainably developing the existing mango acreage.

At this time, in Rang Dong commune, corn and rice fields have been converted and replaced by lush green fruit gardens. From 2018 to now, Rang Dong commune has converted and planted 50 hectares of fruit trees, mainly mango and jackfruit. In 2023, Rang Dong people will harvest the first crop of fruit with a total output of about 20 tons and 100% of the products will be guaranteed.

Mr. Lau A Sinh, Chairman of Rang Dong Commune People's Committee, said: The fruit tree planting projects have shown initial results, helping to increase people's income. However, after the project ended, many households had difficulties in caring for and developing their orchards. Some areas had dead and underdeveloped trees. Therefore, the commune propagated and mobilized people to focus on caring for and developing the existing area and not to expand the area of fruit trees.
