This is the story of Dr. Dang Thi Linh, who devoted her life to medicine, and her two children – Dr. Hanh Dung and Dr. Minh Tri – who continued the path their mother had chosen, carrying with them the aspiration to build a modern eye hospital for their homeland. This is not only a story about a career, but also a story about love, dedication and a dream that never stops.
Mother – The One Who Lights the Flame of Passion
More than 30 years ago, in the midst of the difficult days of local medicine, a young and enthusiastic girl chose the field of Ophthalmology with a strong belief: “The eyes are the windows to the soul, and I want to preserve that light.” That woman is Dr. Dang Thi Linh, one of the pioneer ophthalmologists in Binh Thuan. During her years of practice, she has witnessed countless tears of joy when patients regained their sight, as well as the sadness of those who lost their sight. She not only considers medicine as a job, but also a mission.
During sleepless nights by patients’ bedsides, during days of traveling to treat patients in remote areas, she always carries the heart of a physician – patient, dedicated and devoted to the patient. No matter the circumstances, she always believes that: “As long as I can save one more pair of eyes, all efforts are worth it.”
There were nights when she returned home late at night, tired but her eyes still shining with joy. There were times when she hurriedly left the family meal to perform surgery on a serious case. But for her, that was never a sacrifice. It was the choice of a heart that loved her profession. And that love was passed on to her two children, Dr. Hanh Dung and Dr. Minh Tri - who grew up with their mother's stories about patients and her journey to restore light to thousands of blind eyes.
The Girl – The Aspiration to Build a Specialized Hospital
Among the two children, Dr. Hanh Dung, the eldest daughter of Dr. Linh, is the one who receives the most inspiration from her mother. She understands her mother's hardships and knows that being a doctor is not only a profession, but also a mission. From a young age, Hanh Dung witnessed her mother's joy every time she helped patients regain their sight. Growing up, when choosing a career path, she did not hesitate but determined to pursue Ophthalmology, because it was not only a profession, but also a part of the family's flesh and blood.
After graduating from the University of Medicine and studying abroad, Hanh Dung did not choose to work in a large hospital in a bustling urban area, but decided to return to her hometown and continue her mother's path. Doctor Hanh Dung returned to Binh Thuan with a greater aspiration: to build a modern, specialized eye hospital, helping local people access advanced treatment methods right in their hometown without having to travel far.
For her, treating diseases is important, but bringing modern medicine closer to the people is even more important. And that is also the reason why she devoted all her heart to building Binh Thuan Eye Hospital - a place that not only examines and treats diseases, but also brings hope to poor patients, the elderly, and children with refractive errors but cannot afford treatment. Now, as the Director of Binh Thuan Eye Hospital,
Dr. Hanh Dung is not only a manager but also a pioneer in improving the quality of treatment, updating new technology and expanding medical services. She still remembers the words her mother told her when she was young: "You can become a good doctor, but the most important thing is your heart for your patients." And that is also the philosophy she pursues in her journey of leading the hospital. And just like that, the hospital she leads is developing day by day, becoming one of the high-quality and prestigious Ophthalmology facilities in the community.
The Youngest Son – The Devoted Successor
While Dr. Hanh Dung has the aspiration to build and develop the hospital, Dr. Minh Tri, the youngest son of the family, is the one who inherits his mother's dedication to patients. As the youngest son, Tri had many other options, but his love for Ophthalmology has been deeply ingrained in his soul since his childhood. When he witnessed his mother and sister's dedication to the profession, he understood that he could not stay out of this journey. Dr. Tri is especially passionate about researching refractive error treatment methods, Phaco surgery and new techniques in Ophthalmology.
He believes that with the development of technology, patients will have more and more opportunities to effectively treat eye diseases. Every day, he works hard in the operating room, devoted to each patient, regardless of time. He said that every time he witnesses a patient regaining their sight, he feels that his work is more meaningful than ever. He constantly improves his knowledge, not only to become a good doctor but also to continue his mother's belief and support his sister in developing the hospital.
One hospital – One common dream
Under the leadership of Dr. Hanh Dung, with the support of Dr. Minh Tri and the advice of Dr. Linh, Binh Thuan Eye Hospital is gradually becoming one of the leading ophthalmology facilities in the region. The hospital not only provides high-quality medical examination and treatment services but also promotes humanitarian eye examination programs, supporting patients in difficult circumstances.
Dr. Hanh Dung once shared: “My mother spent her whole life bringing light to others. We – her children – will continue that journey, not only with the hands of a doctor, but also with the passion of those who want to change local healthcare.” And indeed, they did it.
The fire never goes out
On February 27 this year, when the hospital held a ceremony to honor doctors and nurses, Dr. Linh sat quietly watching her two children on stage. In her eyes, there was not only pride, but also emotion - because she knew that the fire she lit that day was now burning brighter than ever. Three generations, three people, but the same ideal: to bring light to eyes, to give hope to lives.
The story of Dr. Linh’s family is not only a story about the medical profession, but also a story about family love, inheritance and unfading devotion. And in each pair of eyes that light up after successful surgeries, there is not only the light of vision, but also the light of hearts that have devoted their lives to service. On the occasion of Vietnamese Doctors’ Day, February 27, we would like to express our gratitude to the doctors – the “fire keepers” in the journey to protect people’s health.
