Trusting an online money making app, got scammed out of billions

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên17/06/2023

On June 17, information from the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention (PA05, Binh Phuoc Police) said that recently, the area has recorded dozens of cases of "falling into the trap" of online money-making scams through applications (apps).

Lost more than 3.1 billion VND 'investing in movie tickets' via app

Specifically, PA05 Binh Phuoc Police received a report from Mr. KTT (29 years old, residing in Phu Rieng District) about being scammed out of billions of dong when he was invited to invest in movie tickets on the app.

According to the report, around January 2023, Mr. T. became acquainted with a Facebook account named 'Huyen Trang'. After a period of texting back and forth, 'Huyen Trang' asked Mr. T. to invest in movie tickets on the Disney app, and Mr. T. agreed.

After downloading the Disney app and registering an account, Mr. T. tried his luck with a few hundred thousand dong and saw that it was profitable, so he boldly invested 122.5 million dong in the account 'Huyền Trang' provided to order 90 movie tickets.

At this time, the "customer service staff" enticed him with VIP1 movie tickets that would yield a 10% profit and asked Mr. T. to transfer more than 127 million VND to invest. Believing him, Mr. T. transferred the requested amount, but the Disney app continued to notify him of giving away VIP2 movie tickets with a 20% profit on the condition that he transferred an additional 652 million VND. Without any doubt, Mr. T. transferred the correct amount and received a notification of giving away VIP3 movie tickets with a 30% profit and asked to pay more than 1.9 billion VND for processing.

A victim came to Department PA05 of Binh Phuoc Police to report being scammed online.

After 'investing' 90 movie tickets with the transferred amount of more than 2.8 billion VND, Mr. T. saw that he had made a profit and wanted to withdraw the money, but the system on the app notified him that he had to pay 35% tax. Mr. T. continued to transfer more than 1.3 billion VND but was asked to pay an additional 40% of the withdrawal channel fee of more than 2.33 billion VND. At this point, Mr. T. thought he had been scammed, so he filed a complaint of fraud with the police.

Lost billions because of finding jobs online

Previously, around March 2023, because she was unemployed, Ms. HTH (35 years old, living in Dong Xoai City) went online to look for a job and was introduced to a data entry job on the application by a brokerage company, and at the same time instructed to download the Kdata app to register.

After registering, Ms. H. was instructed to deposit money into the system account to create orders and enter data according to the command. Ms. H. followed the instructions and tried it with a small amount of money and was able to withdraw both principal and interest to her account.

Seeing that the advice was correct, Ms. H. continued to pay money to create increasingly large orders, from a few million VND/time to more than 300 million VND/time. When paying the amount to create orders worth up to hundreds of millions of VND, the 'instructors' always gave the excuse that the syntax was wrong in making the order, had to pay personal income tax, create more orders... to be able to withdraw the principal and interest.

In an attempt to get back the money she had paid, Ms. H. transferred more than 1.3 billion VND to many different accounts but still could not get the money back. At this point, realizing she had been scammed, Ms. H. went to the police to report it.

Similarly, in February 2030, Ms. NTT (40 years old, residing in Dong Phu District) also participated in data entry with 300,000 VND with a profit of 30% after being instructed to install the Kdata app. Withdrawing both principal and interest of nearly 400,000 VND, Ms. T. continued to participate in data entry with an amount of 1 million VND/time, then up to 500 million VND/time.

When the total amount deposited reached more than 800 million VND but could not be withdrawn, Ms. T. asked, the consultant gave all kinds of reasons such as having to pay personal income tax, depositing money with incorrect syntax, checking the account... and continued to ask Ms. T. to transfer money, otherwise the account would be locked and all the money would be lost. Because she was afraid of losing money, Ms. T. borrowed money from relatives and friends, even borrowed money at high interest rates to deposit in the hope of being able to withdraw the money. When the amount deposited reached nearly 2 billion VND, Ms. T. realized that she had been scammed and reported it to the police.

Be vigilant with online money making through apps

According to the leader of PA05 Binh Phuoc Police, in the past time, the unit has prevented and arrested many law violators on cyberspace. At the same time, it regularly warns about the tricks that these scammers often use, 'luring prey' by playing on people's psychology and need to find jobs.

When players deposit a small amount of money, these scammers will pay the principal and interest in full. Then they continue to 'lure' until the victim trusts and deposits a large amount of money, then they give many reasons, asking for more money. However, the more the victim trusts and deposits, the more they... lose. In fact, the real money that the victim transferred to the subjects has been appropriated, only the 'virtual' number remains on the app.

Through the above incidents, PA 05 recommends that people should be more vigilant and not believe in making money through online apps.
