Responding to World Environment Day, at the Memorial Site of the first Oil and Gas exploitation project in Vietnam (Dong Co commune, Tien Hai district, Thai Binh province), PetroVietnam held a seminar on "Implementing the program of planting 3 million trees, phase 2022-2025".
Attending the Seminar were Mr. Tran Quang Dung - Standing Deputy Secretary of the Group's Party Committee; Mr. Pham Tuan Anh - Member of the Group's Board of Directors; Ms. Nghiem Thuy Lan - Member of the Standing Committee of the Group's Party Committee, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group Trade Union; along with officials, leaders, representatives of employees of the Group's member units and experts from the Institute of Ecology and Construction Protection, Institute of Ecology and Forest Protection.
At the program, Ms. Vu Thi Thu Huong - Deputy Head of the Group's Communications and Corporate Culture Department said that in 2022, PetroVietnam launched a campaign for all employees and oil and gas workers to plant 3 million trees at oil and gas projects and localities in the period of 2022 - 2025. In the past 2 years, the units have planted and cared for more than 615,135 trees.
Many member units of the Group have taken specific actions to implement typical programs such as: Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Corporation (PVEP) has coordinated with localities/units to plant more than 260,000 trees on 76 hectares of forest in Ca Mau, Thai Binh, Nghe An and now has forests named PVEP; PetroVietnam Fertilizer and Chemicals Corporation (PVFCCo) has guided its affiliated units to assess the impact of crops on the environment and has supported 100,000 casuarina seedlings and accompanying materials to be sent to Truong Sa islands in the program "Greening Truong Sa"; Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company (BSR) has committed to planting 1 million trees in the province with Quang Ngai province; ...
At the program, delegates from member units of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group and experts from the Institute of Ecology and Construction Protection discussed, exchanged experiences, shared practical lessons and provided directions for implementing the tree planting program.

Mr. Dinh The Hung - Head of Technology and Environmental Safety Department of Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Corporation (PVEP) shared that in the process of implementing the tree planting program, PVEP encountered many difficulties and challenges such as lack of experience in the forestry sector; limited reference documents on CO2 absorption capacity of plants; lack of large local land funds, etc. Therefore, to overcome these difficulties, PVEP has coordinated with forestry agencies; prioritized tree planting on large land areas for long periods of time, especially in the Southern region. In addition, PVEP also retains the right to obtain CO2 credits for planted forest areas, thereby contributing to reducing net greenhouse gas emissions.
According to Mr. Ta Quang Huy - Deputy General Director of PetroVietnam Fertilizer and Chemicals Corporation (PVFCCo), in the process of planting trees on the island, PVFCCo had to face extremely harsh climate. Therefore, choosing the right plant varieties for the soil and high endurance is the key to help the trees grow. After a period of research, PVFCCo chose casuarina trees and combined them with measures to protect against the sun and wind, and install bamboo stakes to help the trees stand firm and grow.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Anh - Representative of the Environmental Safety Technology Department of Vietnam Oil and Gas Group shared research on selecting plants and methods for calculating CO2 absorption capacity. Of which, 14 plant species meet the criteria, proposed for the research area focusing on the surveyed provinces and cities of Thai Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Quang Ngai, Ho Chi Minh City, Ca Mau.
Mr. Bui Xuan Duong - Chief of Office of Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company (BSR) said that in the process of implementing tree planting in Quang Ngai province, BSR has implemented it proactively and in detail by developing many plans. In the process of developing the plans, BSR realized that there were many difficulties, especially the issue of funding for implementation and tree care after planting. To overcome these difficulties, the company will sponsor units and localities to buy seedlings and mobilize other social resources to participate in tree planting and tree care after planting. This plan helps BSR save costs and mobilize the participation of professional departments in inspection, supervision and tree planting with localities.
Speaking at the seminar, Mr. Pham Tuan Anh - Member of the Board of Directors of PetroVietnam said that more than 60 years ago, on November 25, 1959, President Ho Chi Minh wrote the first article in Nhan Dan Newspaper titled "Tet planting trees" and since then, President Ho Chi Minh's wish has become a good custom of our nation: "Spring is Tet planting trees to make the country more and more Springy".
The 19th and 20th centuries witnessed an explosion of science and technology and a strong industrialization process. However, along with that process, the environment has also seriously degraded; natural disasters and catastrophes are causing many serious consequences for human life. Climate change has become one of the greatest challenges facing humanity.
Therefore, countries around the world must join hands to protect the environment and combat the impacts of natural disasters. PetroVietnam is no exception to this trend. The Group has developed a campaign program and specific actions in implementing tree planting. This is an important solution to help reduce emissions and minimize negative impacts on climate change. Through the 3 million tree planting program, oil and gas workers have learned many lessons and experiences to improve tree planting efficiency, contributing to improving the living environment.

“I hope that all staff and workers of the Oil and Gas Group will continue to support tree planting and must identify this as an important part of PetroVietnam’s development process. We must turn the tree planting movement into a cultural practice; moving from amateur to professional. The types of plants selected must be suitable for the soil and climate of the growing area, thereby helping the plants grow well,” Mr. Pham Tuan Anh emphasized.
On this occasion, PVEP also coordinated with the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union to plant 1,000 trees at Thai Binh 2 Thermal Power Plant. This is a very meaningful activity, demonstrating the sense of responsibility of Oil and Gas workers in the work of building and protecting the environment, contributing to greening the headquarters, campuses of agencies and units; works, projects, factories, enterprises; localities and regions with oil and gas activities.
