On March 11, North Korean media continued to broadcast messages opposing the annual joint military exercise called Freedom Shield between the US and South Korea, which opened a day earlier and will last until March 20.
Patriot missiles were installed at Camp Humphreys, a US Army garrison in Pyeongtaek, about 60 km south of Seoul, on March 10. |
According to the Korean Central News Agency ( KCNA ), Freedom Shield is the "largest-ever" joint military exercise between the US and South Korea, "clearly showing who is responsible for worsening the security situation on the Korean peninsula".
In another article, the Rodong Sinmun (Labor News) newspaper, which caters to the general readership of North Korea, also condemned the joint military exercise as aimed at Pyongyang.
The newspaper accused the two allies of "mobilizing various types of the most modern nuclear war equipment" to carry out this annual exercise across South Korea.
This is the latest in a series of consecutive statements condemning the joint military exercises between the US and South Korea by North Korea. On March 10, the country criticized the exercise as a "dangerous provocation".
However, North Korean media has not commented on the country's ballistic missile test, which took place on the same day as the US-South Korea joint military exercises.
North Korea has fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward the Yellow Sea, the first such test since President Donald Trump returned to the White House, according to the South Korean military.
Regarding this launch, on the same day, March 10, White House National Security Council spokesman James Hewitt confirmed that he had been informed and affirmed the US commitment to "complete denuclearization of North Korea".
In addition, Mr. Hewitt also cited a statement from the US Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) opposing North Korea's launch and calling on Pyongyang to "refrain from further illegal and destabilizing actions."
However, USINDOPACOM also assessed that "this incident does not pose a direct threat to US personnel, territory or allies", but emphasized that "the US commitment to the defense of South Korea and Japan remains unchanged".
