WTO Director-General Okonjo-Iweala said Vietnam is a "success story in socio-economic development" when meeting Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh today.
This comment was made by WTO Director General Okonjo-Iweala when meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, attending the World Economic Forum (WEF) Davos 2024, in Switzerland, on January 17.
Last year, Vietnam's economic growth reached 5.05% compared to 2022, higher than the growth rate of 2020 and 2021 - the time affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. This level is recorded as one of the high growth groups in the region and the world in the context of global difficulties, with many countries experiencing low growth.
Ms. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said she was impressed and considered Vietnam a success story in socio-economic development. The WTO Director General also highly appreciated the organization's cooperation with Vietnam in recent times.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that in the process of international economic integration, Vietnam always appreciates the cooperation and support of the WTO. However, he is concerned about protectionism and new standards on climate change, and the difficulties that developing economies face due to these barriers.
The Government leader proposed that the WTO discuss with developed countries to provide technical assistance to developing countries with a suitable implementation roadmap.
WTO Director-General Okonjo-Iweala said a European Commission expert team had been working with the organization, listening to developing countries and calling for the necessary technical support.
Meeting with Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) today , Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that Vietnam supports promoting cooperation in the field of intellectual property and innovation to bring knowledge into socio-economic development. He wants WIPO to continue to advise Vietnam to do better in this process.
"Protecting intellectual property is a major global issue, the foundation for promoting innovation and science and technology," said the Prime Minister.
The WIPO Director General highly appreciated the innovative spirit of the young generation of Vietnam and affirmed his readiness to support Vietnam in these areas.
At a meeting with Ms. Amani Abou Zeid, High Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalization of the African Union (AU), the Prime Minister wished to increase cooperation with African countries, especially in agriculture, trade and increase exports of each side's strengths.
Ms. Amani Abou Zeid commented that tourism will be a potential field that both sides need to promote in the coming time.
