With infinite sorrow and regret, we bid farewell to Comrade General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, an exceptionally outstanding and talented leader, a great cultural figure, a shining moral example, an exemplary personality, a loyal communist who devoted his whole life to the country and the people. He was also an excellent successor and practitioner of Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and style; an erudite and talented theorist of the Party, a pioneer in supplementing and perfecting the theoretical system on socialism and the path to socialism in Vietnam, raising the level of Vietnam's political theory in the period of renovation.
The passion for political theory and science never stops flowing.
The Study Magazine (now the Communist Magazine) is a source of deep inspiration, always full of vitality for a life of continuous study and research of comrade Nguyen Phu Trong. Nearly 30 years working at the Communist Magazine, going through many different jobs, from a staff member of the magazine's Documentation Department when he was young until becoming Editor-in-Chief, he wrote and edited hundreds of articles and political theory research papers, not only with the experience and accumulated knowledge, but more than that, with the passion and sense of responsibility of a talented scientist and journalist.
For more than 8 years as Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council, in charge of the Party's theoretical work, and later as General Secretary and head of our Party, Professor, Doctor Nguyen Phu Trong still devoted much enthusiasm to theoretical research activities and summarizing the Party's practices.
Therefore, the works and articles of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong are always at the height of political theory and strategic thinking, profound and insightful, just as: "the more jade is polished, the brighter it becomes, the more gold is refined, the purer it becomes". His simple image, humble style, profound knowledge and sharp intelligence are typical of the qualities and intelligence of a great intellectual, always receiving the trust, love and admiration of the scientific community at home and abroad. He has passed away, but the works, projects, articles and speeches that he left for the entire Party, the entire people, the entire army, the Vietnamese scientific community and the treasure of human knowledge will forever be invaluable assets, accompanying the development of the country and lasting with the nation.
Theory must have a vision ahead.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong always emphasized the importance of innovation and creativity in theoretical work; it is necessary to smoothly combine theoretical research with practical summaries; between theoretical research, practical summaries with policy orientation, so that theory truly carries the breath of practical life, illuminates the way, guides practice and is a solid basis for formulating guidelines, policies and strategies. He criticized: “The root cause of subjectivity is due to poor theory, disregard for theory and empty theory; the cause of dogmatism is due to being far from practice, not closely following practice”. He advised the Central Theoretical Council: “We cannot let the backwardness of theory continue compared to the movement and demands of practice. Theory must rise up to lead the way and accompany practice”.
To combine theoretical research with practical summaries, he proposed two important dialectical principles: steadfastness and innovation, inheritance and development. We must always be steadfast and firm on the foundation of Marxism-Leninism, Ho Chi Minh thought, and steadfast in the goal of national independence and socialism. This is extremely important, a matter of principle, of vital significance to the regime, and no one is allowed to waver or waver. At the same time, we must know how to inherit the reasonable development results of practice; the thoughts, viewpoints, and guidelines that have been implemented in practice and proven correct by practice.
Of course, we do not persist in inheriting mechanically and arbitrarily, but persist in always going hand in hand with innovation; and innovation must have principles, innovation for development, not hasty and extreme innovation. Accordingly, he requested: “We need to selectively absorb and supplement the latest achievements in ideology and science in a critical and creative spirit so that our ideology and doctrines are always fresh, always invigorated, carrying the breath of the times, not falling into rigidity, stagnation, or backwardness compared to life”.
Pioneering in supplementing and perfecting theories on innovation policies
Being attached to the cause of building Vietnam's political theory in the renovation period, in the last time working with the Central Theoretical Council, the head of our Party always kept in mind one thing: "... By 2025, on the basis of summarizing 40 years of implementing the renovation process, 50 years of national reunification, it is necessary to basically perfect the theoretical system on the renovation policy; by 2030, on the basis of summarizing 40 years of implementing the Platform for national construction in the transitional period to socialism, summarizing 100 years of the Party's leadership of the Vietnamese revolution, it is possible to supplement and develop the Platform, meeting the requirements of the new period; supplement, enrich and take a number of steps to further perfect the Party's ideological foundation; And by 2045, when our country becomes a developed country with high income, we will have a complete, scientific and modern theoretical system on socialism and the path to socialism in Vietnam.
In recent years, although his health is not as good as before, the General Secretary still devotes a lot of time, enthusiasm and intelligence to the Party's theoretical work. Preparing for the drafting of documents to be submitted to the 14th National Congress of the Party, he noted: What new issues are there in the coming term? Do we need to summarize 40 years of renovation to deeply discuss the country's foundation, potential, position and international prestige? Is this the foundation and driving force to inspire, bring excitement and pride to the entire Party, the entire people and the entire army before the great and historic achievements of the renovation process, so that our people firmly believe in the Party's correct and creative viewpoints and guidelines on socialism and that our path to socialism is in line with the country's reality and the development trend of the times?
Summarizing and generalizing scientifically, objectively and comprehensively about the cause of building socialism in our country, he pointed out: This is a great creative cause, full of challenges and difficulties, but it is also the glorious path that our Party, beloved President Ho Chi Minh and our people have chosen. Because only socialism can ensure a society in which “development is truly for the people, not for profit that exploits and tramples on human dignity… economic development goes hand in hand with social progress and justice, not increasing the gap between rich and poor and social inequality… a society of humanity, solidarity, mutual support, towards progressive and humane values, not unfair competition, “big fish swallowing small fish” for the selfish interests of a few individuals and groups… sustainable development, in harmony with nature to ensure a healthy living environment for present and future generations, not for the exploitation, appropriation of resources, unlimited material consumption and environmental destruction… a political system in which real power belongs to the people, by the people and serves the interests of the people, not just for a wealthy minority”. This is also the wish of beloved Uncle Ho and the entire Vietnamese people.
From the practice of nearly 40 years of implementing the renovation process and 30 years of implementing the Platform for national construction in the transitional period to socialism, he paid great attention to and directly directed the supplementation and completion of the theory on Vietnam's renovation policy, as a prominent new point in the Documents of the 14th National Congress of the Party. He suggested that it must be a profound and comprehensive theoretical system on the regular issues of the construction, development and protection of the Vietnamese Fatherland in the renovation period; crystallizing the wisdom of the entire Party, the entire people and the entire army on the basis of steadfastly applying and creatively developing Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought, inheriting the traditional values of the nation, and absorbing the quintessence of human thought.
The theory of the renovation policy must demonstrate the Party's strategic vision, scientific, revolutionary and innovative thinking on socialism and the path to socialism in Vietnam; on perfecting the Vietnamese development model with outstanding characteristics of stability combined with innovation, rapid and sustainable development, taking people as the center, based on three pillars: Socialist-oriented market economy, Vietnamese socialist rule-of-law state and socialist democracy; on synchronous innovation in the fields of politics, economy, culture, society, environment, national defense, security, foreign affairs, etc.; on continuing to grasp and handle well the major, dialectical relationships; and on the factor of "Party's will, people's heart" which is decisive for the success of the cause of national construction, development and defense.
Guiding thoughts at the theoretical level
Throughout his life, he has constantly researched, studied, and struggled with theoretical and practical issues. General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong possesses the qualities and talents of an exceptionally outstanding politician, a great culturalist, and an erudite scientist. His 35 books, which include his articles, speeches, and research works, have crystallized the wisdom of the entire Party, demonstrating the theoretical heights, strategic thinking, leadership, and direction of our Party leader on the core and most important issues of national construction, development, and defense in the period of renovation.
Discussing broad, difficult, and complex theoretical issues, but with a simple presentation, plain expression, distilled from practical life, with the red thread running through the idea that "people are the root", people are the subject and the center of the renovation process, each work of the General Secretary has a special power of persuasion and influence, spreading strongly among cadres, party members and people, and is admired and highly appreciated by many international friends. He is truly a theorist for the people and lives in the hearts of the people.
From vivid practice, he has made an important contribution to generalizing, supplementing and deeply explaining 10 major relationships that reflect the dialectical laws of the country's innovation, integration and development process that need to be handled well. These are the relationships between stability, innovation and development; between economic innovation and political innovation; between following market rules and ensuring socialist orientation; between developing productive forces and building and gradually perfecting socialist production relations; between the State, the market and society; between economic growth and cultural development, realizing progress, social justice, and environmental protection; between building and defending the socialist Fatherland of Vietnam; between independence, autonomy and international integration; between Party leadership, State management, and people's mastery; between practicing democracy and strengthening the rule of law, ensuring social discipline.
Regarding the economy, he affirmed that the concept of developing a socialist-oriented market economy is a very fundamental and creative theoretical breakthrough of our Party. It is a complete, modern and integrated market economy, taking people as the center, for the people and by the people; fully promoting the role of the people as masters, implementing social progress and justice in every step and every development policy.
Deeply imbued with President Ho Chi Minh's thought on "Culture must light the way for the nation" and on building socialist Vietnamese people, he and our Party proposed wise policies on reviving culture, building comprehensively developed Vietnamese people, so that culture and people truly become a resource, endogenous strength and important driving force for rapid and sustainable national development.
Inheriting the fine traditional values of the nation in the history of building and defending the country, he and our Party have summarized and promoted a new way of thinking about protecting the Fatherland early, from afar, defending the country when the country is not yet in danger; promoting the pioneering role of comprehensive diplomacy; paying great attention to building a position of people's hearts, building a position of national defense and a solid position of people's security; the army and the police are two wings of a bird, must be the sword and the solid shield of the regime. From the opening and very important orientation of the General Secretary, our Party has constantly perfected and promoted a unique foreign policy and diplomacy school, imbued with the identity of the "Vietnamese bamboo tree": Firm roots, strong trunk, flexible branches; soft, clever, but very resilient, resolute; flexible, creative but very brave, steadfast, courageous; achieving great achievements, turning points of historical significance in the field of foreign affairs of the country in recent times.
Over the past three terms, the General Secretary has left a very prominent mark in the work of building and rectifying the Party and the political system to be clean and strong in all aspects; resolutely promoting the fight against corruption, waste, negativity, "self-evolution", "self-transformation", according to the motto "no forbidden areas, no exceptions", which has been agreed and supported by a large number of cadres, party members and people. His very profound and meaningful advice on: Party building is the key task, cadre work is the "key of the keys"; relying on the people to build the Party, no inspection, no leadership, do not "see red thinking it is ripe", fighting corruption, whoever does not dare to do it should boldly stand aside and let others do it; if you are not honest and clean, you cannot speak to anyone, "Honor is the most sacred and noble thing"... have touched the hearts, deeply engraved in the minds and actions of every cadre, party member and people.
The excellent successor of the great President Ho Chi Minh's career of "cultivating people"
Speaking at the 70th anniversary of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was moved to recall Uncle Ho's sacred instruction: "Cadres are the root of all work. Therefore, training cadres is the root work of the Party". His heartfelt advice: Investing in building a cadre team is investing in long-term and sustainable development; it is necessary to pay special attention to education, improving political mettle, ideological stance, revolutionary ethics and training exemplary manners for the team of students; and must resolutely overcome the situation of being afraid to study, lazy to study political theory or studying perfunctorily, studying just to get a degree in the Party and society, has become the guiding principle for the training and fostering of cadres of our Party in the new situation.
The highest leader of our Party is always concerned about how to build a team of cadres with sufficient qualities, capacity, and prestige to match the task; especially, how to encourage cadres to dare to think, dare to do, dare to innovate, dare to take common responsibility to remove bottlenecks and obstacles, bringing about new breakthroughs in the process of innovation and development of the country. He also advised: The deeper the innovation process goes, the more complex theoretical and practical problems appear; therefore, it is necessary to build a team of political theory cadres with sufficient capacity to solve these problems in the new period.
With a noble and simple, pure and beautiful life, with exemplary revolutionary ethics, diligence, thrift, integrity, impartiality, and deep concern for comrades, compatriots and international friends, the General Secretary has converged and crystallized the most beautiful and noble values of Vietnamese political culture; he is a great personality, a blend of a leader, a theorist and a culturalist; he is the image of an exemplary teacher, a shining example for cadres, party members and people to learn from and follow.
Comrade General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is no longer with us, but the legacy he left behind, his noble aspirations, his humanistic thoughts and pure morality will forever remain with us; they are a source of great encouragement and motivation for us to resolutely move forward on the path of successfully building socialism, a great and glorious creative cause that our Party, Uncle Ho and our people have chosen, for a rich, democratic, prosperous, civilized and happy Vietnam, standing shoulder to shoulder with the world powers.
