Ha Tinh is a land famous for its tradition of studiousness and respect for teachers. That source is being preserved by generations through stories of deep teacher-student relationships over the years.
Deep affection
When mentioning teacher Tong Tran Lu, former Vice Principal of Ha Tinh High School for the Gifted, many generations of students in the homeland of Hong Mountain - La River always remember the kindness he gave them in their journey of knowledge. As for the respected teacher, although he is 80 years old this year, he is still moved every time he mentions his 38 years of teaching with 38 "ferry trips" carrying his beloved students.
Mr. Tong Tran Lu - former Vice Principal of Ha Tinh Specialized High School.
In 1968, after graduating from the Faculty of Literature (Vinh University, Nghe An), Mr. Tong Tran Lu (born in 1943, in Son Ninh commune, Huong Son) was assigned to teach at Nghi Xuan High School, now Nguyen Du High School. From 1976-1980, he worked at Ha Tinh Pedagogical College, now Ha Tinh University; from 1981-1990, he taught at Le Huu Trac High School (Huong Son). From 1991-2006, Mr. Lu was Vice Principal of Ha Tinh Specialized High School, then retired.
In the story about his teaching memories, the teacher mentioned many generations of students, some of whom were famous in many fields and some of whom had simple lives full of love. For him, besides the knowledge of books and successes in their careers, the most memorable thing is that the generations of students he taught always knew how to live decently and constantly contribute to the country and homeland. One of the students that teacher Lu mentioned with pride and love was Associate Professor, Doctor Hoang Trong Canh (Vinh University).

Teacher Canh was one of the first generation of students when Mr. Lu came to teach in Nghi Xuan. “He was a gentle student from Xuan Yen village, poor but good at studying, had beautiful handwriting, and wrote fluently and concisely. Later, when he had many successes, he confided to me: The reason I chose to pursue education was because I admired the way you lived... For me, that saying as well as the success of Hoang Trong Canh is the motivation, inspiration, and pride that helps me strive to dedicate myself to the teaching profession until the end” - Teacher Tong Tran Lu shared.
It is known that even though decades have passed, Associate Professor, Doctor Hoang Trong Canh still regularly contacts and visits Mr. Lu - his teacher with thoughtful care.
Talking about his students' affection, Mr. Lu still remembers a profound and unforgettable memory. That was in October 2022, he had to face a "life-threatening" illness due to myelodysplastic syndrome. The disease broke out suddenly, forcing him to be rushed to the Ha Tinh Provincial General Hospital. Upon hearing of his illness, former students from all over the country came to visit and care for him.
Among them, Dr. Pham Huu Da, Head of the Cardiology - Geriatrics Department of the hospital, a former student of Mr. Lu, devoted all his heart to saving his teacher. Returning from "death's door", Mr. Lu said he was moved when, in his misfortune, his former students took care of him like a father. Along with the medicine and treatment of the doctor, the spiritual medicine that the students brought had a huge effect on helping him overcome his illness.
Teacher Tong Tran Lu and his wife, Ms. Bui Thi Tan, recall memories of their teaching career.
These days, when generations of students in every Vietnamese countryside in general and Ha Tinh in particular are eagerly looking forward to showing gratitude to their teachers on the occasion of Vietnamese Teachers' Day (November 20), Mr. Tong Tran Lu and his wife, Ms. Bui Thi Tan, have the opportunity to review their teaching journey through the wishes and inquiries of their former students.
Talking about his life as a teacher, Mr. Lu expressed: "Time has passed, but for me, every journey standing on the podium, every generation of students is full of beautiful memories. I am a teacher who imparts knowledge to students, but it is the students' efforts to study, their successes and their feelings for me that inspire and encourage me to fulfill my mission as a teacher."
Love at the sea gate
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Pho Hai Secondary School (Nghi Xuan), along with guests, hundreds of former students returned to reminisce about old memories and reunite with their old teachers. Among them, a group of classmates from class B, 1998-2002, returned to school in large numbers.
Ms. Ngo Thi Hao (born in 1987), the former class monitor, said: “As soon as I received the information, I informed my classmates in the class group and they participated enthusiastically. Besides visiting our old school, this is an opportunity for us to meet our old teachers to satisfy our longing after many years apart.” One of the teachers that Ms. Hao and her classmates are looking forward to meeting is Ms. Tran Thi Thuan (former Math teacher at Pho Hai Secondary School).
A group of former students took a photo with Ms. Tran Thi Thuan (holding flowers in the front row, middle) during the recent 30th anniversary celebration of Pho Hai Secondary School (Nghi Xuan).
Ms. Tran Thi Thuan (born in 1952, currently living in Xuan Pho commune) graduated from Ha Tinh 10+3 Pedagogical School, now Ha Tinh University, in 1977. She spent 33 years on the podium, working at many different schools such as Xuan My Secondary School, Dan Truong... Before retiring in 2010, Ms. Thuan spent more than 10 years working at Pho Hai Secondary School. Although she is now over 70 years old and has been away from the podium for quite a while, many generations of students still remember her with deep memories.
Ms. Ngo Thi Hao shared: “At that time, my class consisted of 48 students, most of whom were children of farmers in difficult circumstances. My impression of her was the love she had for her students. She taught with enthusiasm and never scolded them even if they did not know their lessons or were mischievous. She cared about each person's situation. Even though her family was poor at that time, she still took some of her small salary to buy textbooks and supplies for disadvantaged students. The memory that I will always remember is that there was a student who was very mischievous, even acted rudely, but she did not get angry but gently analyzed and advised. As the class monitor, she always told me to care, pay attention and encourage my students so that they gradually understood the problem...”.

Years have passed, now the students of class B, 1998-2002, Pho Hai Secondary School have grown up, each has their own job, family and lives and works all over the country. However, every time they review their student life, they all remember Ms. Tran Thi Thuan with respect and gratitude from the bottom of their hearts. Her heart for students, her diligence in a lifetime of sowing knowledge and cultivating beautiful personalities in a coastal village school is the luggage for many generations of students to grow up, constantly train themselves and contribute to society.
The stories of Mr. Tong Tran Lu and Ms. Tran Thi Thuan and their generations of students are clear, passionate notes in the great chorus of the teacher-student relationship of the people of Ha Tinh. The stories of teachers who are tirelessly sticking to schools in mountainous, remote areas to sow knowledge for their students; of former students contributing to building churches for deceased teachers, building houses for poor teachers in many localities... are contributing to multiplying the tradition of studiousness and respect for teachers of the people of Ha Tinh.
In the bustling atmosphere towards Vietnamese Teachers' Day, beside each teacher who is competing to teach well, contributing to nurturing knowledge, there are students who are striving to win good grades, together weaving stories about the strong teacher-student relationship over the years so that the source of studiousness of people and the homeland of Hong Mountain - La River flows forever...
