(PLVN) - A series of activities took place during Earth Hour 2024. The message sent from these activities is to make saving electricity a habit. Research by the World Bank shows that if Vietnam practices saving electricity effectively, it is equivalent to building a new power plant with a capacity of 12,000 MW.

Spread the spirit of saving electricity

From 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on March 23, 2024, Noi Bai International Airport suddenly turned off the lights. A series of electric lights in the areas were turned off in response to the Earth Hour (ETH) event in 2024. A representative of Noi Bai International Airport said that the Airport has made a detailed plan to turn off and reduce the power usage of unnecessary electrical equipment and public lighting.

Specifically, reduce the power consumption by 50-70% of lighting in some areas in the passenger terminal, parking lot and operation control room; cut and reduce the capacity of air conditioning equipment at Passenger Terminals T1 and T2; turn off 100% of all billboards and lighting at the Port's offices. Notably, the Port representative affirmed that participating in the GTĐ campaign at Noi Bai International Airport does not affect all flight activities at the Port.

This is just one of thousands of activities in response to the GTĐ event taking place globally from 20:30 to 21:30 (local time) on Saturday, March 23. In Vietnam, all 63 provinces and cities simultaneously carried out activities to celebrate the event with the message "Saving electricity becomes a habit". This message was sent to the community with a call to practice energy saving, save energy and protect the environment.

According to data on national electricity consumption, the National Power System Control Center said that after 1 hour of turning off the lights in response to the 2024 Green Energy Campaign, the whole country saved 428,000 kWh of electricity (equivalent to about 858.9 million VND).

Deputy General Director of Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) Vo Quang Lam said that the message "Saving electricity becomes a habit" of the 2024 Energy Efficiency Campaign expresses the desire that "the habit of energy saving is not only implemented in 1 hour of the event but maintained 24 hours of 365 days a year. We hope that the 2024 Energy Efficiency Campaign will continue to spread the spirit of using energy economically and efficiently among all people, businesses, and socio-economic organizations.

"TKĐ will become a habit for each Vietnamese citizen to contribute their small part to building a greener society, moving towards a low-carbon economy, contributing to the goal of net zero emissions by 2050 that the Vietnamese Government committed to at COP26."

A representative of Ho Chi Minh City Electricity Corporation said that in March 2024, the Youth Union of the Corporation implemented accompanying activities in response to the GTĐ Campaign such as establishing a TKĐ propagandist team in 21 districts and Thu Duc city.

Along with that, implementing propaganda programs on energy saving and efficiency in Ho Chi Minh City. And not only in GTTĐ, from March 24, 2024, the Youth Union of the Corporation continues to coordinate with the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union to organize an exhibition booth in response to energy saving and efficiency at the City Youth Festival.

Save electricity to optimize costs

The Prime Minister's Directive on Electricity Saving, issued in 2023, has set very clear energy saving targets such as in the period of 2023-2025 and the following years, the whole country must strive to save at least 2% of total electricity consumption annually; By the end of 2025, strive for 100% of street lighting to use LED lights... From there, large electricity users such as industrial production and public lighting have also been set specific energy saving targets.

“As one of the key national energy users, in order to use energy economically and effectively, Noi Bai International Airport has implemented a detailed plan, proposing technological and technical solutions in management and operation such as using LED lighting technology; Applying automatic technology and information technology to optimally manage the power consumption time of equipment” - shared a representative of Noi Bai Airport.

Actual results in 2023 show that, with small actions such as adjusting the number of recessed lights turned on during the day in the lobby on the 3rd and 4th floors - Terminal T1 to suit actual lighting conditions; Replacing fluorescent and compact bulbs... with LED lights at Passenger Terminal T1; Replacing 2 local air conditioning units on the 2nd floor of Terminal T1 and many other activities, Noi Bai International Airport has saved 357,205kWh/year, equivalent to saving electricity costs of over 700 million VND/year compared to the old exploitation plan and the use of previous equipment.

In order to achieve the plan and goal of saving and using energy effectively in 2024, Noi Bai International Airport continues to implement solutions such as replacing fluorescent lamps and compact lamps with LED lamps at terminal T1 and hall E - T1; Replacing 4 local air-conditioning units in the public area on the 2nd floor of terminal T1... It is expected that the energy saved in 2024 will be about more than 637 thousand kWh/year, saving costs equivalent to about 1.4 billion VND/year compared to using old equipment.
