Nationwide, 906,549 candidates took the English high school graduation exam. According to the analysis of the score distribution of the subjects, English continued to be at the bottom with the lowest score among the 9 subjects.
English score distribution in the 2024 high school graduation exam
The average score for this subject was 5.51, a slight increase from last year (5.45). The median score was the same as last year, 5.2.
The number of candidates with failing scores (1 point or less) in this exam was 145, down from last year (192).
The number of candidates with below average scores in this subject accounted for nearly 43% with 386,861 candidates scoring below 5. The highest score a candidate achieved was 4.6.
However, this subject also had 565 exams with a score of 10, an increase compared to 2023 (494 scores of 10).
The whole country has no candidate who scored 10 points in math in the 2024 high school graduation exam.
Thus, English continues to be the subject with the lowest high school graduation exam results among the high school graduation exam subjects for many consecutive years.
Experts say that, although So the English score distribution this year has also begun to have more positive changes compared to the score distribution of previous years.
Regarding the score distribution of subjects, the Ministry of Education and Training also assessed that the score distribution of high school graduation exam subjects in 2024 will remain stable and similar to the score distribution in 2023 and previous years.

Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc (Hanoi National University) commented: the percentage of excellent scores in social sciences, for example literature and geography, is high, and the percentage of below average scores is low. Meanwhile, in natural sciences such as math and physics, although the percentage of excellent scores has improved, the percentage of below average scores is still higher than in other subjects.
Therefore, the work of orientation and university entrance exams in the natural science group needs to be noted and focused on more.
