Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên12/11/2024

The quality of general education in the Mekong Delta has improved a lot, escaping the "lowland" and making a breakthrough in the results of the high school graduation exam in the 2020-2024 period.

However, to improve the level of people in this region to the national average is not easy overnight.

MASS QUALITY OF HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION: RANKED 3RD IN 6 REGIONS

Based on the average test score (TBĐT) in each year of localities nationwide announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, we calculate TBĐT and the average TBĐT of 5 years of each socio-economic region.

In particular, the GPA of the Mekong Delta ranked 3rd out of 6 regions in all 5 high school graduation exams, and the average GPA of this region over the past 5 years reached 6.48 (nearly good). With this result, it can be affirmed that the quality of mass high school education in the Mekong Delta has escaped the "lowland" in terms of high school education quality.

Based on the exam scores of math, literature, and foreign languages of each locality, in each year, in the period 2021 - 2024, calculating the total score of 3 subjects of each locality and each region in each year shows that the Mekong Delta has always ranked 3rd for 4 consecutive years and has a total score of 3 subjects higher than the national average.

From 2020 to 2024, the high school graduation exam will be conducted according to the 2019 Education Law with 3 compulsory subjects: math, literature and foreign language. In addition, students will choose 3 more subjects according to the combination of natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology) or the combination of social sciences (history, geography, civic education). The results of the high school graduation exam in the whole region are high, in which An Giang, Bac Lieu, Vinh Long, Tien Giang, Can Tho, Dong Thap have the average score higher than the national average; An Giang, Bac Lieu, Vinh Long have five in the top 10 nationwide.

The region's average education level is always high, so the annual high school graduation rate of the provinces in the region is over 99%. In 2024, the Mekong Delta provinces will have the highest graduation rate. Specifically, Tien Giang (99.9%), Tra Vinh (99.88%), Long An (99.8%), Soc Trang (99.6%), Bac Lieu (99.75%), Kien Giang (99.72%), Vinh Long (99.69%), Ben Tre (99.65%), Dong Thap (99.59%), An Giang (99.60%), Hau Giang (99.50%), Can Tho (99.06%) and Ca Mau (99.05%).

SOME EDUCATION INDICATORS STILL LOW

In the period 2010 - 2024, all fields of study and levels of education in the Mekong Delta will be maintained and developed in terms of scale, quantity and quality. Universal primary and secondary education will be consolidated, with gradual investment in high-quality education. Higher education institutions will increase from 13 to 21 and the student population will increase from 42,500 to more than 149,700.

However, education in the Mekong Delta is still facing difficulties, with some educational indicators lower than the national average. According to the 2019 population census, the rate of student mobilization at the right age in the Mekong Delta is lower than the national average; of which, the lower secondary school level is 7% lower and the upper secondary school level is 13% lower. The rate of the lower secondary school age population not attending school in the Mekong Delta is the highest in the country, at 12% (the whole country is 6.6%), the rate of the upper secondary school age population not attending school is also the highest in the country, at 37.5% (the whole country is 25.9%).

The rate of population aged 15 and over with "high school graduation" level in the Mekong Delta reached 11.3% (the lowest), while the Central Highlands (13.5%), the Northern mountainous region (14.4%), the Central region (17.5%), the Red River Delta (20.4%), the Southeast (22.2%) and the whole country (17.3%).

The proportion of the population aged 15 and over with the highest level of education "above high school" in the Mekong Delta is the lowest, at 9.7%, compared to the Central Highlands (13.9%), the Northern mountainous region (18.1%), the Central region (18.5%), the Southeast (20.8%), the Red River Delta (27.9%) and the whole country (19.2%).

To increase the proportion of people in the Mekong Delta with high school education from 11.3% to the national level of 17.3% and the proportion of people in the Mekong Delta with post-high school education from 9.7% to the national level of 19.2%, a long-term and persistent process is needed.

The overall results of the whole region in terms of both general quality and core education quality ranked 3rd out of 6 regions of the country, a remarkable and proud achievement of education in the Mekong Delta region.

Entering a new phase, to maintain and promote the achievements of the past 5 years, the Mekong Delta needs to invest in developing the school network and teaching staff to ensure an increase in the rate of mobilizing students at all levels to go to school, especially at secondary, high school and post-high school levels.
