10th grade admission in Ho Chi Minh City: Specialized classes are stressful, regular classes are easy

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training announced that it will enroll 70,070 students in public grade 10 for the 2025-2026 school year.

This year, the number of 9th graders expected to graduate from junior high school is 88,210. Thus, the rate of junior high school graduates entering public 10th grade this year is 79%, while last year the rate was only 65%.

According to the 10th grade enrollment quota table announced by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training on April 11, this year the city has many schools enrolling large numbers of students. Notably, among these are top schools and famous schools.

Passing the entrance exam to get a place in a public high school this year is not too stressful. However, the main thing is that students must register their wishes appropriately. That is, students should not choose a high school with an admission score far beyond their academic ability.
Mr. TUAN ANH (math teacher in district 11)

Grade 10 quotas often increase

Specifically, Mac Dinh Chi High School, District 6 will enroll 1,060 students in the new school year; Hung Vuong High School, District 5 will enroll 1,035 students; Marie Curie High School, District 3 will enroll 1,000 students; Gia Dinh High School, Binh Thanh District will enroll 960 students.

Tay Thanh High School, Tan Phu District and Nguyen Trung Truc, Tran Hung Dao High School in Go Vap District, Truong Chinh, District 12 all have a target of enrolling 900 students/school.

Three high schools Hoang Hoa Tham, Vo Thi Sau in Binh Thanh District and Nguyen Cong Tru in Go Vap District enroll 855 students each. Phu Nhuan School in Phu Nhuan District enrolls 825 students.

Schools with a target of 810 students are: Nguyen Van Tang, Thu Duc, Linh Trung, Tran Phu, Binh Chanh, An Nhon Tay...

According to Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, the determination of the enrollment quota for grade 10 this year is based on the following factors: the physical conditions of public high schools; the coefficient of classroom usage, the number of grade 12 students graduating in the 2024-2025 school year; the proposal of the high school to increase or decrease the total number of classes.

"Increasing the rate of junior high school graduates entering public grade 10 is one of the factors that makes this year's exam easier than last year's," said Mr. Minh.

The difficult road to specialized grade 10

This year's admission season is the first year that four famous high schools in Ho Chi Minh City have stopped enrolling students for specialized 10th grade. They are Nguyen Thuong Hien, Gia Dinh, Mac Dinh Chi and Nguyen Huu Huan high schools (normal high schools have stopped enrolling students for specialized 10th grade to strictly follow the specialized school regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training). Last school year, these four schools enrolled 770 students for specialized 10th grade.

Thus, this year, the enrollment quota for specialized 10th graders in Ho Chi Minh City has been cut by 770 students. Meanwhile, 3 specialized schools in Ho Chi Minh City have not increased their quota or have increased it very little.

Specifically, the Gifted High School (Ho Chi Minh City National University), Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted did not increase its quota, Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted increased its enrollment by 35 students by opening an additional IT class of 10 (in previous years, this school only recruited 1 IT class of 10 with 35 students, but this year it recruited 2 IT classes with 70 students).

Not to mention that in previous years, Tran Dai Nghia High School only recruited students who graduated from secondary schools in Ho Chi Minh City, but this year it recruits students from all over the country. This shows that the "race" to get into specialized schools in Ho Chi Minh City is increasingly difficult and arduous.

Speaking with Tuoi Tre, Mr. Ho Tan Minh informed: "In order to create conditions for students to study at public high schools and based on the facilities of the schools, it is expected that the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City will ask the City People's Committee to adjust the enrollment quota for grade 10 of 3 high schools.

Specifically, Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted, Nguyen Thi Dinh High School for the Gifted in Sports and recruiting 10th grade students for Binh Tri Dong B High School (a new school under construction in Binh Tan district, expected to be put into use at the end of 2025).

If the above proposal is approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted will increase 70 quotas for grade 10 math and chemistry. However, these 70 seats are nothing compared to the 770 quotas cut at the 4 famous high schools mentioned above.

Note before registering for grade 10

According to Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, before registering for public grade 10, students need to find out which high schools with the highest admission scores are suitable for their own abilities. Next, consider the distance from home to high school, parents should orient their children to prioritize schools near home for convenient travel and health protection.

Another very important factor is to find out whether the subject combinations chosen according to the 2018 generaleducation program of high schools are suitable for students' career orientation or not.

Finally, the registration of wishes must follow the principle: the school of choice 2 must have a lower standard score (can refer to the standard scores of previous years) than the school of choice 1; the school of choice 3 must have a lower standard score than the school of choice 2. Avoid registering all 3 wishes at schools with the same standard score.
