“The merger does not affect students much in choosing a major”

Nguyen Dinh Long, a student at Pleiku High School, said he had heard that the State and Government were preparing to merge provinces, cities, ministries and agencies, so he was worried that this would affect the recruitment needs of various professions.

According to Dr. Pham Tan Ha - Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University), the merger of agencies and units under the direction of the Central Government aims to streamline the management apparatus, thereby improving work efficiency.

However, this merger does not affect you much. When choosing a major, you must know what career you want to pursue.

Mr. Ha advised students not to worry too much about the merger information.

“I think you should care and need to be able to learn what and how. Whether your professional capacity and skills are good enough to meet the needs of employers or not, that is important.

When you go to school and are afraid of unemployment, you create barriers for yourself. If you have a dream, you must be determined to conquer it. First of all, you need to research the majors to choose the right major that you love," Mr. Ha advised.

High school graduation rate over 99%, university admission rate over 80%, hard to find a job?

Meanwhile, Nguyen Manh Tien - a student at Pleiku High School - wondered: "Currently, the high school graduation rate is over 99% and the university admission rate is over 80%. So, will there be a job after graduating from university? Especially for the education sector, the entrance score is high but graduates are unemployed. Do schools support students in finding jobs?

Sharing about this, MSc. Hoang Thuy Nga - senior expert of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) - said that with the application of the new general education program in 2018, the teaching staff is in great shortage in all localities across the country. Therefore, the State currently has a policy of exempting tuition fees and supporting living expenses for pedagogical students. To enjoy this policy, students must have good academic results.

Pedagogical students who study under a training order from a locality must return to that locality to work in the education sector. If they do not work in the education sector as committed, these students must refund the tuition and living expenses they have received.

To be successful in your career, you must have passion and love for your field of study.

Ho Chi Minh City National University reduces methods, reducing candidates' opportunities?

A male student of Hung Vuong High School for the Gifted wondered why Ho Chi Minh City National University recently announced a reduction to 3 admission methods, which would be disadvantageous for students who do not have national excellent student awards or consolation prizes. Why did Ho Chi Minh City National University reduce admission methods? Have member schools adjusted admission methods to create favorable conditions for students in the above categories?

Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Thang - Head of Training Department of University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - said that in reality, Ho Chi Minh City National University only summarizes the admission method. For a long time, this university has had a priority method of direct admission and priority admission for excellent students according to the list of 149 high schools nationwide.

This year, schools will include which methods in the direct admission method along with direct admission according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training?

Regarding the quota, it probably won't change either, about 10-20% of the quota is for direct admission priority and priority admission for the most excellent students.

“The method of considering national excellent student awards still exists and this selection depends on the school and the major. Therefore, students should not worry about the method of considering candidates who have won national excellent student awards, candidates will not lose their opportunities with this method,” Mr. Thang affirmed.

Sharing more with students about this, Master Phung Quan - University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - said: "Many students from specialized schools are worried that winning consolation prizes in the excellent student exam will not be given priority for admission.

However, at the University of Natural Sciences, if you win an encouragement prize and register for priority admission, you will receive the highest score in this method: 3-year high school transcript score plus award points. So you can rest assured.

"I beg you to pay attention to the engineering and technology industry"

In response to many concerns raised by students at the consultation session, Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, head of the training department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, affirmed that information on the internet that university graduates will not have jobs is completely untrue. The labor market, especially the engineering and technology sector, is seriously lacking in human resources.

In fact, students are tending not to choose engineering and technology majors, so recently the Government is building a national science and technology development policy with the goal of increasing the proportion of students in this major to 33%.

Currently, if not counting information technology, the percentage of students majoring in engineering and technology is only 12%, very low compared to other majors. Compared to other countries in the region, this percentage is also extremely low. While our country has an orientation towards developing science and technology and industrialization.

“I advise students to carefully study and boldly choose the science and technology sector, to contribute to the country having a harmonious and developed labor market. I urge students to pay a little attention to engineering and technology sectors because this sector is very necessary for the development of the country,” said Mr. Nhan.
