This is an issue that many candidates are interested in during the admissions and career counseling program in Tien Giang on March 8.

The program was organized by Tuoi Tre newspaper in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) at Tien Giang University campus, attracting thousands of candidates from the area to attend.
Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan (Head of Training Department, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry)
When ChatGPT is too good at languages
Thuy Vy, a student at Doc Binh Kieu High School in Tien Giang, asked about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the development of the language industry and foreign language learning. She expressed concern that the increasing advancement of AI could cause the language industry to stagnate, affecting career opportunities in this field. In that context, if one continues to pursue a language industry, will job opportunities still be open?
Dr. Pham Tan Ha - Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - said that in the context of strong development of technology and AI, candidates' concerns about the language industry are well-founded.
Currently, tools like ChatGPT can support quick and easy translation, but they are just tools, not a complete replacement for humans.
According to him, to learn a language well, learners not only need to know vocabulary but also need to deeply understand phonemes, syntax, as well as the culture of the countries that use that language - things that AI cannot fully grasp.
Besides, Dr. Pham Tan Ha believes that language aptitude also plays an important role. In particular, Vietnamese students who want to be good at foreign languages must first be good at Vietnamese.
"Many people mistakenly think that just being fluent in a foreign language is enough, but in fact, to translate accurately and deeply, a solid Vietnamese foundation is a prerequisite," said Mr. Ha.
Will AI take IT jobs?
Meanwhile, Thanh Dat - a student at Tan Hiep High School - expressed concern about the risk of unemployment in the information technology industry due to news about the wave of layoffs and the strong development of AI and digital technology.
Answering this question, MSc. Phung Quan - admissions consultant from the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - informed that in recent years, many large corporations in the world, as well as in Vietnam, have cut staff, or IT teams in the information technology industry. This means that it is an undeniable fact that not everyone who studies information technology is sure to have a job, and many people have been and are unemployed.
However, according to Mr. Quan, the problem lies not only in the recruitment needs but also in the capacity of each graduate. If they have good and excellent expertise, graduates can still achieve their desired salary. On the contrary, if they do not study well, they may have difficulty finding a job or have to work in a different field.
MSc. Phung Quan believes that looking at the broader picture, the information technology industry is still an important field, closely linked to social needs and digital transformation pressure. Not only the technology industry, but other fields such as biology, chemistry, and pharmacy can also apply information technology, opening up many directions for learners.
Therefore, according to Master Phung Quan, students can choose two development directions: one is to specialize in technology, the other is to apply information technology to another practical field.
"The most important thing is still the capacity of each individual. AI and new technologies are just tools. If we know how to take advantage of them, they will greatly support our work. On the contrary, if we lack skills and initiative, learners will gradually lose their competitiveness in the labor market," said Mr. Quan.
What about "traditional" engineering fields like mechanical engineering?
Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan - Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry - said that even "traditional" engineering fields such as mechanics and AI also leave certain impacts.
One of the most obvious impacts is the development of automation and smart manufacturing, when robotic systems and machines can replace humans in many stages such as processing, assembly and product quality inspection. At the same time, AI algorithms support real-time monitoring of production processes, optimizing performance.
According to Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, candidates who want to study engineering, especially "traditional" fields such as mechanics, should not be afraid of the development of AI. Instead, they should proactively equip themselves with new skills.
In addition to specialized knowledge in mechanics, you can learn more about automation technology, programming, data analysis and how to apply AI to your industry.
