Tet bonus is only enough for gas, many teachers in mountainous areas do not dare to go home to visit

Lunar New Year 2025 is approaching, many teachers are unhappy and their bonuses are almost zero, only a few kilos of gas, if they want to send gifts to their families, they still have to think.


After nearly 10 years working at a secondary school in the mountainous district of Muong Lat (Thanh Hoa), teacher Vu Thi Huong considers Tet bonuses a luxury. Every time she hears that her colleagues in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are expected to receive Tet bonuses of tens of millions of dong, the female teacher cannot help but feel sad.

Before the Lunar New Year 2025, Ms. Huong planned to return to her hometown Nam Dinh to celebrate Tet with her family and relatives. But after calculating, with a bonus of about 200,000 VND, she decided to save money to return home during the next summer vacation.

"The Tet bonus every year is only enough to buy gas, not enough to book a round-trip ticket for the whole family. To be honest, we teachers in the highlands do not look forward to Tet. It's very sad to return home with "empty pockets and empty hands". Normally it's fine, but when Tet comes, seeing people receive bonuses equal to several months of their salary, it makes me sad to think about it," Ms. Huong confided.

Her family's economy is still facing many difficulties. To have money to make ends meet for the upcoming Tet holiday, this year the female teacher is considering hiring out to wrap banh chung.

“I don’t mind doing extra work to earn more income during Tet. I just hope that one day soon, teachers will enjoy benefits and a 13th month bonus like other professions so that I won’t feel so sad and have more opportunities to return home to celebrate Tet with my family,” the female teacher said.

Ms. Le Thi Quang, Vice Principal of Xa Luong Kindergarten (Nghe An) said that while other industries and professions are happy with year-end bonuses, the education sector, especially the public school system, has almost no concept of Tet bonuses. If there is any, it is just a way to save money during the year, so that at the end of the year there is still a surplus, called a morale booster.

"Xa Luong Kindergarten has 26 teachers and 6 staff. If internal financial management is done well, each teacher is expected to receive about 200,000 VND/person, and each staff member will receive 100,000 VND/person. The school will spend about 6 million VND in Lunar New Year bonuses for all staff," Ms. Quang calculated.

According to Ms. Quang, the school's Tet bonus is not even equal to a teacher's usual monthly salary. Therefore, the wish to receive a Tet bonus equal to the 13th month salary is still too far away.

According to a leader of Huy Giap Secondary Boarding School (Cao Bang), when asked about Tet bonuses, many teachers here remained silent because they did not want to say "a sad refrain".

"For many years, we have never had the concept of Tet bonuses. The school still has many difficulties, so we don't even have gifts, let alone tens or hundreds of thousands of VND in encouragement. The teaching profession, like other professions, also hopes to have Tet. Therefore, the 13th month salary will be a great encouragement, so that teachers can feel more secure every time Tet comes," he said.

According to current legal documents, there are no regulations on Tet bonuses or 13th month salary for teachers who are civil servants in public service units.

The bonus regime for cadres, civil servants, public employees and armed forces under Decree 73 of the Government only applies to outstanding work achievements and the results of the assessment and classification of the annual task completion level of each individual. The Decree also clearly states that the specific bonus level for each case does not necessarily have to be linked to the salary level according to the salary coefficient of each individual.
