What foods should be limited when kidney function is impaired?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên20/11/2024

People with impaired kidney function should limit their intake of animal fat, offal, and organ meats, limit their daily protein intake, limit salt and foods containing salt...

Dr. Le Thao Nguyen (nutritionist, Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital) said that the main function of the kidney is to remove waste from the body through urine excretion and balance minerals such as sodium, potassium, and phosphorus during the blood filtration process. When the kidney function is impaired, these processes all work less effectively.

For people with impaired kidney function, building a healthy diet is very important. Patients need to eat enough nutrients (sugar, protein, fat, vegetables, fruits), increase fiber, but choosing the right foods to prevent further kidney damage is extremely important. A suitable diet helps patients control the situation and support the treatment process effectively.

Below are some foods that people with impaired kidney function should limit in their daily meals:

Limit protein : Eat less than 150g of meat/fish per day. Eat high-quality protein sources (white meat such as chicken breast, fish, beans, egg whites, etc.). On average, an egg white contains about 11g of protein.

Patients should limit soy sauce, fish sauce and protein intake in daily meals.

Limit potassium and phosphorus such as: Bananas, oranges, grapes, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, watermelon, avocado, apricot, grapefruit, dried fruits and nuts, milk and dairy products such as cheese, yogurt, green leafy vegetables, asparagus...

Foods to eat less : Broccoli, blueberries, red grapes, garlic, buckwheat, cabbage, bell peppers, onions, macadamia nuts, pineapple, shiitake mushrooms...

You should choose grains with low protein content such as potatoes and tapioca; eat rice and wheat flour up to 200 g/day depending on the level of kidney failure.

Limit eating animal fat , intestines, organs, skin, bones/broth, bone broth... Limit fried foods. Eat vegetable oils (sunflower oil, soybean oil, sesame oil, gac oil, olive oil...).

Eat fresh food , do not eat fast food, canned food, instant noodles, cold cuts, ham, pork floss, sausages, cheese, pickles, kimchi...

Notes when reading food labels

Limit your salt intake by paying attention to food labels and the sodium content on the label.

Eat blandly, do not dip fruit in salt, limit dipping in soy sauce and fish sauce. Replace salt with other spices to create a rich flavor for the dish, such as herbs, pepper, curry, vinegar, onions, garlic, ginger, rosemary, lemon juice, etc.

In addition, to help reduce kidney function decline, patients need to pay attention to the following changes in daily lifestyle:

  • Exercise lightly for at least 30 minutes, at least twice a week.
  • Eat dinner at least 2 hours before bedtime, and rest for 30-45 minutes after eating.
  • Limit alcohol, tobacco, stimulants, soft drinks, carbonated drinks...

How to cut down on salt intake

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), each adult should only eat less than 5 grams of salt per person per day to protect their health. Currently, Vietnamese people eat about 8.1 grams of salt per day, mainly from spices used in cooking.

Therefore, to prevent kidney failure, we should reduce the amount of salt in each meal by:

Limit the use of too much salt, spices, seasoning powder, and fish sauce when preparing, marinating, and cooking food.

Change dishes such as steaming or boiling instead of stewed, stir-fried, or grilled dishes that require lots of salty seasoning.

Use other flavors when preparing food such as onion, garlic, ginger, pepper, lemon... to increase the deliciousness of bland dishes.

Reduce dipping sauce, salt and pepper, chili salt, shrimp salt when eating or dilute dipping sauce to limit the amount of salt in the diet.

Limit the use of processed foods high in salt: pickled cucumbers, sausages, ham, sausages, bacon, etc.
